Hello,

I am a 26 year old female and I have been ill now with various symptoms, the most frustrating symptom being the constant fatigue, doctors don't seem to know what's wrong and at 17 they diagnosed me with chronic fatigue syndrome. After feeling completely let down and unheard by my doctors surgery. I did a private blood test last year which came back with below range vitamin D, Serum folate and very low B12. I took this to my GP surgery and in response they gave me 6 loading dose injections of B12 and then told me I wouldn't need anymore and to get new blood tests in a year which I have done they came back:

Serum Vitamin B12: 214 [197- 771]

Serum Folate 1.8 [3.9 -25]

They refused to give me more B12 although that's low in the range.

My mother has a faulty DI02 gene and under active Thyroid. She suspects I may too, Although the doctors say the won't help me because my results are within their range.

Serum free T4 14.5 [12-22]

Serum TSH 2.67 [0.27-4.2]

Is anyone able to shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Yvette

Welcome to the forum, YvetteMayS.

Folate is deficient so the B12 you have won't work well. My GP prescribed 5mg folic acid for a couple of months to correct folate deficiency. Your GP should have checked for pernicious anaemia when giving you loading injections. If PA is confirmed you need injections at 2-3 monthly intervals for life.

Go to healthunlocked.com/pasoc for advice on PA, B12 deficiency and folate deficiency.

TSH 2.67 indicates your thyroid is beginning to struggle but FT4 14.5 is in range. NHS won't usually diagnose hypothyroidism until TSH is over range or FT4 below range. You may find supplementing 200mcg selenium gives some thyroid support.

Welcome! Another of my pet hates! Cant understand why doctors test things then don't do anything. I know they aren't experts at everything but to ignore results outside the range is stupid. They might as well not bother testing them if they don't act on them. Sadly so many of us have to supplement at our own expense in order to feel well but the lack of knowledge and support is wrong. You may have a faulty gene as your mum has but I don't know enough about how it presents itself to comment but your doctor should be advising you on that. I'm glad in a way my GP knows nothing as that's may be easier than one who think they are experts but it's not helping you.
