Vitamins and supplements beating hcl and selenium

Hi all, following my last post regarding being diagnosed with Hashi I am on Lansoprazole 60mg daily, I have silent LPR acid in throat, not your usual heartburn symptoms. I understand that Hashi reduces stomach acid so couldn't understand why I am on Lansoprazole as well. I have reduced the dose down to 15mg daily in the hope of stopping and maybe replacing with Zantac Rantitide for a time to see how it goes. I have read that Selenium and Betain HCL with Pepsin may be the way to go. I am taking Ferrous Fumerate iron tablets 300mg once or twice daily as well as Vit D 800iu daily after having high doses to correct a deficiency. Could anyone advise if my thought process is going the right way. Could anyone recommend products that work are organic or good quality as its a minefield and don't want to buy rubbish. I am not being treated with Levo as Endo not happy to treat unless TSH is nearer 10, NHS. guidelines apparently it's 4.4. I posted blood results on here previously and have tested positive antibodies.

Thank you for your invaluable help.

Christineblue As your Vit D was severely deficient at 14 before, what is your new level? It's very likely that 800iu is not good enough for a maintenance dose, that's a very small dose and a lot of people find they need nearer 2000iu daily as maintenance. The recommended level, according to the Vit D Council, is 100-150nmol/L and that's what we should aim to maintain our level at.

Also, in case you don't already know, there are important cofactors needed when taking D3

vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds

Check out the other cofactors too.

Selenium can help reduce antibodies, the recommended supplement is selenium l-selenomethionine 200mcg daily, as can a strict gluten free diet. Gluten contains gliadin which is a protein though to trigger antibody attacks.

Betaine HCL with Pepsin will help raise stomach acid, it should be taken during a meal containing protein, with plenty of water.

Raw organic Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother, taken in honey sweetened water, at mealtimes is another way of raising low stomach acid.

Is your Ferrous Fumarate prescribed? What is your current level? When taking iron tablets your level should be monitored, too much iron is as bad as too little. Take each iron tablet with 1000mg Vitamin C to aid absorption and help prevent constipaton. Always take iron 4 hours away from thyroid meds and two hours away from other medication and supplements as it will affect absorption.

If you say what supplements you are looking for, I may be able to suggest some.

ChristineBlue,

You would need to wean off Lansaprozole before trying to raise stomach acid with Betaine.

I would ask to see another endo. Hashimoto's will progressively destroy your thyroid gland so there's absolutely no point in waiting until you accrue a host of hypothyroid symptoms by waiting until TSH is 10 before treatment is started. Read Dr. Toft's comments in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your Endo.

There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

Hi seasidesusie & clutter

Thank you fir your replies. I have prescription îron and Vit d, but I don't understand why GP has not prescribed co factor K2M7. I am due to see dr next week, the private ENT who is the last of one referral after another,i will ask for full bloods and thyroid levels to be done. I will post results when I get them.

I have emailed Loiuse for Dr Tofts article and printed info about Hashi, I will take birth with me.

Would you know if a ENT DOC will be able to assist with Thyroid questions. There seems a fine line between a Gastro Doc and ENT when it comes to acid reflux and LPR reflux, all seems like a merry go round, nit overly impressed at the moment.

Thanks for your help.
