Thyroid issues whilst menopausal

Hi everyone, I'm 54, started going through the menopause in 2012 and still no sign of a let up unfortunately. Three months ago I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid function and currently on 150mg of Levothyroxine (apologies if spelt incorrectly) my question is has anyone in the community experienced excessive sweating being on these tablets. It does say in the leaflet one of the side effects can be increased body heat; since being on these tablets I seem o be on fire more than usual most of the time. I'm also experiencing pins and needles, has anyone experienced this too being on the medication, if so what did you do to overcome it as it's irritating.

Any and all advice welcome....................,

Do you know if your thyroid antibodies have been tested for cause being autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto's

It's very common to have low vitamin levels when hypo, but especially with Hashimoto's, have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 checked recently?

Also how long since last thyroid blood test, what were the test results, including ranges.

If you have the results add them to your post.

Pins and needles can be low B12

If not had test recently ask GP to do all these including antibodies if never tested. FT3 too if possible (can be unlikely lab will do it, even if GP requests)

If they are unhelpful private testing is possible

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw, both companies often have money off offers,

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after.

Hi, I m also on levothyroxine 100mg and have been for 4 years. I did experience really strange hot flushes which came over me very suddenly but they stopped after a few months. I can't really remember but it may have been when my medication was increased from 50- 100mg. I also get pins and needles so it's interesting to hear about low b 12. I may also do a test. I am already on vit d supplements which my dr found out about only after I went in and really complained that something was not right as I didn't feel as well as I felt I should. I was still desperately tired and fuzzy and achey despite them saying my results were in range. I wonder wether doing private testing is the way to go. I wish I could do it myself but don't really feel experienced enough to.

Just as likely to be menopause. I had symptoms for 7 years before giving up and going on to biohrt. Pins and needles can be low B12 or calcium.

Some people, including myself, have experienced problems taking the Teva brand of Levothyroxine. I found they gave me terrible sweating whilst on them - my periods stopped in 2014 - which weren't due to menopause but the medication. I have changed to another brand now and, whilst I still get hot flushes, they are nowhere near as bad. It might be worth trying a different brand of Levothyroxine to see if that helps you too.

As others have suggested, B12 deficiency can cause pins and needles.

Hi. I started menopause at 48 (53 now) and was having hot flushes around my upper body and face long before starting Levo 7 weeks ago. I am still having them after starting the drug even though my feet and ankles are always very cold. So it seems that my hot flushes will continue regardless of hypo status or Levo because I won't take hrt. I will say though that since I have started levo (Teva brand) I have started to notice that my flushes are guaranteed to hit within minutes of and are worsened by drinking alcohol. Won't stop me having an odd drink a few nights a week though, I just carry my mini fans around😉.

Hi it would be helpful to have your. Lois test results, have you increased to 150 in three months? It could be vitamin deficiency as already mentioned but I find I get more hot and sweaty when over medicated too, only way we can help is to see your results really :-)

Welcome to the forum.

That's a very quick increase. Increases are advised to increase by 25 mcg then stay on that dose for 6 weeks. If you haven't been doing that you must get your bloods tested and then post on here with the ranges. Ranges are important as they differ from lab to lab so without them we should just be guessing.

If you haven't been doing this correctly then you run the risk of being over medicated so I hope that isn't the case as you would feel dreadful.

Doctors don't always understand what they need to be doing but plenty of info on the Thyroid UK site who run this forum. There is a lot to learn, so some tips as to manage things properly.
