My new ndt has calcium!

I thought I'd try a slightly cheaper brand of ndt called Nature Throid. I ordered from the USA. I was aghast to find that each tablet contains calcium. Now, I really am stuck with this, having opened it and started it. I sent a snotty email asking for a refund but no reply. I won't be going with them again! Will I have to take more to counter this absorption problem?

Do you mean Dicalcium Phosphate? It's just a filler. Holds the tablet together. It won't affect the hormones. :)

It just says calcium. I don't know which type it is. But that's interesting, I'm sure you are right. STTM states that they contain quite a bit of cellulose and suggests chewing first. They don't seem as strong to me.

Hoalarg,

If you are referring to the Dicalcium Phosphate it is different to calcium.

I guess it must be that. On the container it just says calcium 17mg per tablet.

It says calcium on the label in the same way that foods state their sugar, fat and carbohydrate content. That is, the total intake of calcium by taking a tablet. (The label also says magnesium and sodium.)

If you look at the attached full prescribing information, it tells you the actual ingredients - which include:

Colloidal Silicon Dioxide

Dicalcium Phosphate

Magnesium Stearate

Microcrystalline Cellulose

Croscarmellose Sodium

Stearic Acid

Opadry II 85F19316 Clear – tablet coating

You can seen clearly that there is Dicalcium phosphate - but unless you are very knowledgable or do some further research, you do not know if the Opadry II 85F19316 Clear contains any calcium (or magnesium or sodium).

Many people are told to control their intake of calcium, magnesium or sodium. The bottle label is simply there to comply with regulations for labelling all things that are consumed so that those who need to can add up all the calcium, magnesium or sodium that they consume.

17 milligrams of Calcium in the form of Dicalcium phosphate is not the same as, for example the 680 milligrams of calcium carbonate and 80 milligrams of magnesium carbonate contained in a Rennies indigestion treatment. Both the precise chemical form of the calcium and the quantity are different.

Don't take it that Nature-Throid is inferior because it contains some Dicalcium phosphate. Many find it their preferred medicine.
