I am 45 years old male.

I experience following symptoms after taking vitamin B complex supplement.

1.Tingling all over the body

2.Twitching all over the body predominantly legs stomach back right-side

3. Shocking sensation in body

4.Crawling sensation mainly in scalp and sometine on other part of body.

5.Numbness in foot and hands. In the night both hand feeling numb.

6.Insomnia, anxiety, stress

7.Sharp pinning/needling sensation in body

I was taking Neurobion (Merck )contain Vitamin -B1 100MG, Vitamin B6- 200MG ,Vitamin B12-200MCG

I took one tablet each day for nearly 40 days. Without knowing thease tablets are poisoning me each single day. I experienced sypmtoms on 25th day but I was thinking thease are not due to vitamin supplement. I consulted neurology doctor he has advised me to do following blood test.

1.Calcium

2.Magnesieum

3.CK/CPK

All above test are normal. Then nerve conduction test and EMG also normal.

Finally doctor concluded I have binign fesuculation . he advised it comes and goes. Just ignore and asked me see psychologist.

I was desperate and suffering all above mentioned symptoms. I searcjed in internet for possible cause and in some website it was mentioned heavy metal toxicity is the one of the cuase of ywiching and tingling in body. I gone to private lab and ordered heavy metal tosicity test for nickel, arsenic, mercury, led, zinc etc

All me heavy metal toxicity reprts came normal.

Finally I ordered all vitamin B complex panel blood test and my vitamin b-6 level was found 212 ng/Ml (normal range is 8.7-27.2) nearly 7 times high than normal range.

I stopped the vitamin B supplement. Today 12 th day and I have still symptoms in the body but the magnitude of the symptoms have been slightly reduced. I have no idea how much damage these vitamins have done and how long it takes to recover. now I am very careful with my diet now avoiding B6 food.

In coming days I will keep update my progress of recovery.

It is too late for me to realize dangers of vitamin supplements…

Do you have thyroid issue?

Johnsonin profile image
Johnsonin in reply to bluebug

yes

Hashimoto thyroid

taking Euthyrox levothyroxine 50 MG since 2 years.

TSH was under control before starting the B-complex. My TSH was 0.36 before starting the B-complex supplements however recently TSH elevated to 5.6. i suspect B6 overdose may have impact on thyroid…

Welcome to the forum, Johnsonin.

B vitamins are water soluble and excess is usually excreted in urine. It's unlikely oversupplementing B6 will have caused permanent damage.

Johnsonin It's not dangers of vitamin supplements per se, it's keeping to a suitable dosage. Long term B6 in high doses can cause problems, as you now know. 200mg B6 in a supplement is an excessive amount and one would hope there would be a warning on the packaging about effects of long term use. I have seen it said that 10mg is enough in a B Complex unless there is a specific need for more. High dosage should really be under the guidance of a practioner.

Also, B12 in Neurobion is cyanobalamin which should be avoided, the best form is methylcobalamin.

SeasideSusie - just wanted to comment - people do respond very differently to different forms of B12 and which one suits best varies from person to person. There is actually quite a body of evidence pointing to cyano and hydroxo being more effective on average than methyl, and for some people methyl will only actually do half the job then need as some people can be unable to convert it to adenosyl - the other form that is used at the cell level, whilst there haven't been any reported cases of people being unable to convert cyano and hydroxo to both forms, though there are some rare genetic conditions that can affect the efficiency of conversion to methyl - but it only impairs the efficiency - it doesn't stop the conversion.

As I can't read every piece of research, I have to go by those that I have read, of which this is one

naturalnews.com/032766_cyan...

It's always difficult to know what to believe as there is so much conflicting information, and what we are told is correct at one point, the same source of information changes their mind at a later date.

Hopefully everyone does their own research and makes up their own mind.

SeasideSusie Sorry if I seemed to be implying that you should read up on everything - wasn't my intention.

I do try to look for research that clear quotes scientific sources and tend to use the US NCBI site which gives access to a large volume of scientific papers and has a reasonable search engine.

The site above seems to be involved in selling methylcobalamin which would also make me look for another source.

The evidence from personal testimonies on the PAS forum is very much as outlined - that people vary a lot in how they respond and its really a question of experimenting to find out which suits you best.

The vast majority of cases of B6 toxicity show complete recovery when supplementation stops - and those reported cases that haven't have been the result of periods of use of around 6 months to a year.

The amount of B6 in the supplement you were taking is certainly above the range where toxicity has been reported.

I find this a useful resource for looking into safe levels of vitamins and minerals

efsa.europa.eu/sites/defaul...

its a bit old now so is worth checking the EFSA site for updates as well

EFSA= European Food Standard Agency.

Several years ago I took a high dose B Complex. This one :

hollandandbarrett.com/shop/...

It had 100mg of vitamin B6 in it, half the amount you were taking. I had neuropathy problems before I started it and those went away. A few months later I developed problems again, similar to what I had in the beginning.

I discovered, like you, that vitamin B6 is the only B vitamin that can build up, and unfortunately some of the symptoms of deficiency can appear similar to symptoms of toxicity.

I stopped taking it, my nerve problems started diminishing, and eventually they went away. I've never taken a high dose B Complex since although now, several years later, I do take a B Complex which contains much more modest doses of everything. If I need extra of any of them I buy them separately.

Hi Johnsonin , how are your symptoms now?

I have been taking neurobion TWICE a day for 3 weeks which was recommended by a Greek neurologist (for a month) and pharmacists!! After reading up on b6 toxicity and my neuro symptoms improving then slightly returning, I am going to stop 1 week before the doctor recommended.

I hope your symptoms have improved.

Hi Johnsonin.

I see you say that you avoid vitamin b6 foods. Obviously that is not possible to do so completely but could you recommend any protein sources that are low in b6. I see all good meats have high levels of B6!! :( You dont have to go into detail but could you perhaps if possible share a list of base level foods that you stick too? I had just a little bit of chicken last night and felt worse today.... I would so appreciate the info. Could you also share an update on how you are feeling? Thank you John.

Best regards my friend. Glad you are healing.

Hi Sentient

I cannot avoid completely B6 rich food however I try my level best to consume less B6 Rich food I mean i eat white/red rice vegetables beans, carrot,I eat verity of vegetable

Consume froots all kind.

I also noticed that whenever I can eat chicken, lamb ,fish, my symptoms are increasing however I am trying to minimize these items but I cannot completely avoid because this food also has other important vitamins and minerals. Eat less than 100 grames of meat per day.

I am avoiding banana , avocado all kind of nuts seeds.

I regularly do exercise and Suana steam 3-4 times per week which is giving me a lot of relief.

I eat indian stuff sambar, rasam, which is good for detoxifying.

There are several websites available which gives you a nutritional value

try below website for more info

I still get strange symptoms sometime my arms are burning, twitching some part of body, pricking sensation in body at different places. All these are B6 toxicity.

My suggestion eat more froots veggies. Less meat/fish I mean less than 100 grams.

i do meditation ,

stress also increases my symptoms.

How R u.nowadays? Symptoms r gone? I took magnesium-b6 tablets for three months (3-4/day) and I had twitching in muscles and vibration in my left leg. 10th day of leaving this vitamin, symptoms started to gone from the next day when i stopped taking B6. Yesterday I ate chicken and today I feel more twitching already. :( I'm.worried about some other serious diseases,but I'm just 34 old. I hope just the B6. I m afraid to go to neurologist yet. I'm waiting.

I'm wondering if I'm dealing with something very similar. I was recently diagnosed with hashimotos (36 tsh and 620 tpo) and have been on levothyroxin/synthroid for the past 8 weeks. I visited neurologist and found out I had elevated b1 (248 nmol/L) and b6 (87 ng/mL)

My symptoms overall are pretty severe and I don't know if it explains all of them. But, i'm having muscle twitching all over the body, occasional feeling of crawling, and numbness in my face. The twitching started before I took b6 supplements I believe, but seemed to get worse after. The numbness started after, although my endocrinologist said it's possible that it's fluid build up hitting nerves. I stopped taking the supplements after I found out last week of my elevated levels.

On another note, I've also had severe muscle fatigue in my legs and a herniated disc that Ive been dealing with for 6 months. My tsh level was 36 when they finally checked it in August and I started thyroid medication.

Do you have any tips or advice for me? Did you have any other muscle symptoms? What kind of symptoms did your thyroid issue present?

t’s been a wild trip.

I had an elevated level of b6 in my body from taking an innocent looking b6 supplement which was actually, 100mg, 5,000 times the Daily Recommended Allowance. Who puts that in a bottle and sells it? My level was 78 and the high normal is 30. B6 stays in the body and accumulates. They put it in energy drinks.

Here are the symptoms of b6 toxicity:

Vitamin B6 Toxicity

Overdosing on vitamin B6 is rare with natural food sources, but possible with pyridoxine supplements. Excessive levels of vitamin B6 can irritate nerves and produce numbness in the hands and feet. Associated symptoms include muscle spasms and cramps. Permanent nerve damage is more serious and can impact mobility. Pyridoxine toxicity can also cause irritation to the nerves in and around the brain, which can result in headaches and migraines. Fatigue is another common symptom because pyridoxine toxicity can disrupt sleep cycles and cause insomnia. The physical symptoms of pyridoxine toxicity can increase the risk for stress, anxiety, irritability and depression.

the side effects of taking very large doses of b6 vitamin can include:

* rapid and/or irregular heartbeat

* poor circulation/cold hands

* irritability, anxiety/insomnia

* numb hands/feet, neuropathy

* inability to fall asleep, interrupted sleep

* headaches and fatigue

So I was having so many of the above symptoms especially insomnia, fatigue, headaches and anxiety on steroids. Every tiny stressor became a monster. It’s a hell I wish on no one:(

I’m having some good days but still some bad ones. I want to be 100% soooooo bad!

I’m finding myself in the exact same situation unfortunately. When I read theses posts it was like someone was reading my mail. Could either of you kindly provide an update on your progress? I know it’s been years but hoping for some encouragement as this has been a very exhausting battle. Thank you! 🤗
