Can the tsh level affect u mentally? When ft4 is high?

Does it make sense that i havent been right mentally since tsh went above 1 can the tsh level affect u even though ft4 is still high?. iv always been ok when tsh was below 1 and ft4 top end of range.. my tsh was 2.5 (0.27- 4.5) 2 weeks ago now its at 4.5...

I seriously believe i need an increase slightly so have decided to do it myself and gone up to 112.5mcg instead of alternate 75mcg and 100mcg....

The TSH doesn't make you feel anything, whatever the level. But, if it has risen, and the FT4 stayed the same, your FT3 has probably dropped. And, it's low T3 that causes symptoms.

You most definitely do need an increase in dose. And probably another one in six weeks time. But, it would be a good idea to get your FT3 tested, to see how well you are converting. :)

Hi and thank you for the info...

My ft3 was at 4.77 (3.1-6.8) does this mean nearly 5 then?? and that was when my ft4 was at the top of range but tsh was at 2.5 (0.27- 4.5) still and i was on 100mcg at the time, i have now increased by myself to 112.5mcg or should i go to 125 i just dont want to go overactive.. i really want to feel mentally better as i go on holiday in 4 weeks with my kids, e.g no anxiety mood drops through day, and detachment feeling and lack of appetite but still forcing meals, iv lost a stone in 6 months since tsh went up and im already slim and tall so i cant afford to lose anymore weight.. :-(

ThyroidObsessed,

As Greygoose said it's low FT3 which makes you feel unwell. TSH rises when FT4 and/or FT3 levels drop. With TSH 2.5 and FT3 4.77 I think it is unlikely you will become over medicated and feel hyper if you increase to 125mcg. If you begin to feel hyper you should skip a couple of doses and reduce to 112.5mcg.

Eat frequent small meals to maintain or increase weight. I found protein shakes in between meals helpful in increasing weight.

Thanks clutter for the great advice as usual.. im not sure how i will know if i go hyper as when i go hypo i get symptoms of being hyper such as anxiety restlessness and so on.. how will i know for sure??

I cannot tolerate protein milkshakes in large amounts as i get bad stomach cramps i can only have maybe enough milk u would have on cereal...

I have been eating frequently and also eating a largr main meal at around 6 at night... iv been losing weight ever since my tsh went up so im hoping my weight stabalises when levels stabalise!?..

ThyroidObsessed,

Overmedication can cause racing heart and pulse, moist palms, sweating, nausea, irritation, aggression, diarrhoea. Try making a protein shake with water or fruit juice.

ThyroidObsessed,

I used My Protein Hard Gainer. Google it. Exercising will help you gain muscle.

Thanks clutter i go walking everyday with my dog but cant seem to gain muscle 😏

If your free T3 is low, then it probably could affect you. T3 is sometimes used as a treatment for depression. How is your B12? Low B12 can make you feel mentally "wrong".

My B12 result a few months ago was similar to yours & anxiety levels were very high plus low mood/ mood swings etc. Supplementing with Jarrow's Methyl B12 (I personally take 5000mcg until bottle finished then reduce to 1000mcg as a maintenance dose but you may want to see some of Seaside Susie's excellent posts on this site re dosage etc as she is a whizz at supplements advice) has really helped. I balance the B vitamins with Jarrow's B- Right. Both are sold by Amazon. Recently my nutritionist took me off B12 and B- Right whilst I do a protocol to clear up various gut problems and I've noticed my anxiety rocket up again so I'm sure the B12 had an effect. My 80 year old mum recently started taking it after years of anxiety & she reported feeling great. Good luck
