Bad batch of Perrigo Liothyronine - any way to get it replaced? Any help gladly appreciated.

Hello folks,

I have been on Perrigo Liothyronine for about 8 months now and have been doing really well on it. However the last couple of weeks I have started feeling really depressed again (this was how I was before I was on Perrigo Liothyronine). These feelings match up to me beginning to take a different batch number of Liothyronine. I have 3 and a bit bottles of this batch left and really feel I need to get it swapped.

Question 1: How can I get it swapped?

I get it on a named patient basis and the health board are already humpty about it because of the price so I doubt I can go to my Dr and ask for another prescription.

Should I go to the pharmacy who supplied it, I imagine they would be unable just to swap it?

Or should I go to Perrigo? Unfortunately they don't actually manufacture the Lio, an American company does, so I don't know if they would be able to do anything either.

Question 2:

When I get my next prescription is there any way to make sure I don't get the same batch again?

I have one bottle of the last batch I was on, I'm going to try these pills and that should show me if the batch is definitely the problem, but I'm pretty sure it is.

The other option is to go back to the Uni-pharma I bought on-line previously which I did well on, until I can get a new prescription. But I'm not too keen on chopping and changing brands if I can avoid it.

I'm really feeling terrible and don't know what to do about this, I need to be taking some sort of effective Liothyronine and my next prescription's not due for almost 2 months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I think your first step has to be to return to the pharmacy that dispensed them. After all, they must be responsible. Of course they might not be able to provide an immediate replacement but it doesn't necessarily take very long.

Yes - contact Perrigo. If it really is a bad batch (that isn't meant to doubt you at all) then the company will surely already know?

Don't let anyone take all the tablets, the packaging, etc., on some vague promise of seeing if they can do something. I wouldn't trust anyone and you always need to have some evidence in reserve. Always get a receipt for anything you hand in.

Thanks Hellvella, this all seems like sound advice, especially the part about not handing everything over on a vague promise, that's exactly the sort of thing that would happen. I shall try Boots and Perrigo and see what the outcome is.

Have you ever had to do this yourself at all?

No - I haven't. :-)

Though I have been involved in questioning medicines.
