I have an underactive thyroid complaint and have had it since 1994. I take thyroxine every day and have always struggled with my weight. I have been told by my doctors to loose weight because this is bad for my health and get to 80 KGS and it gets stuck. Have you any advice about how to lose weight and is it because i have this condition i struggle.

Once you get to a certain weight, do you change things up a bit as your body will stop responding to 'the same old thing'
Maybe up your exercise routine or drop slightly in calories??? Even a few small differences in amounts of food could work for you xx

I think it gets harder to lose, the older I get and the longer it's been there.
If you are not optimally medicated you may find it very difficult to lose any weight. Do you have any other symptoms or would you say your Levothyroxine dose is OK and you are otherwise stable? Did you have blood tests for nutrient levels Vit D, B12, Ferritin and Folate? Are they all OK or do you take any supplements?
The only way to lose weight that I know of is to start on a healthy balanced reducing diet of 1000 to 1200 calories a day and gradually increase exercise of one of these - walking, swimming or cycling from a few minutes x 3 days every week to 3 x half-hour sessions every week minimum.
The diet involves restricting fat to half ounce butter or marge each day. Restricting bread, potatoes, rice, pasta to two portions of any per day. No fried foods, cakes sweets, sugar etc. Three pieces of fruit each day. ALL vegetables (excluding potatoes) can be eaten freely , without limitation and so can some fruits including raspberries, strawberries and water melon. With milk the daily allowance is half pint whole milk or three quarters pint semi skimmed milk or one pint of skimmed milk. Meat - 4oz lean any meat. 2 Oz cheelse. 2 eggs. 6oz fish or bolingbroke in bag fish in sauce. Two of these per day.
I'm not keeping to it just now as I have been doing too much. I don't always sleep well either. I have lost a couple of pounds recently though. So I am glad I am not putting it on. It is best to eat nothing after 6pm. But if really hungry a couple of dry biscuits with last drink. Breakfast could be a piece of fruit and cereal. Always have breakfast. If the main meal can be eaten before 3pm this is better. Sleeping well and relaxing helps. Other than this a simple way to lose weight is write down everything erything you have eaten in the last two days and consider the high calorie foods and just cut down on them. See if that works.
Hope this helps a little.

Do you know if you are adequately medicated? I expect your doctor says so, but we can't always trust our doctors to know. Ask for a print-out of your last blood test results, and post them here. Weight-gain, and difficulty losing it, are major symptoms of hypo.
Don't be tempted to lower your calories too far, because low-calorie diets have a negative effect on conversion, and you will make yourself more hypo.
