I've been symptomatic for years and keep getting my results which are on the higher end of normal. This time it's come back as 5.52 and the doc said that it was only 0.02 over the threshold so she wouldn't want to treat it. She is going to restest in 3 months time.
I understood the normal ranges went up to 4.5, not 5.5 as this suggests. Has anybody else had this?

Ranges vary from lab to lab, unfortunately. And they don't understand that a TSH is always a TSH, no matter what the stupid range, and a TSH of over 3 is hypo. Doctors know so little about thyroid.
I would suggest you get a private full thyroid and vitamin test from either Blue Horizon - the Thyroid plus eleven or Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin- £99 - same test- different companies- both run offers from time to time
All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting to achieve highest TSH - as you have discovered that is all some GP's incorrectly diagnose with
The full tests include thyroid antibodies to test for autoimmune thyroid (Hashimoto's) plus FT3 (most important) and FT4 and vitamins that are common to be low as result of thyroid issues, or may produce symptoms in their own right
Read as much as possible about thyroid, especially Hashimoto's if you have this
If you read lots of posts on here you will see many struggle to get diagnosed or correctly treated

Good websites include the Thyroid Pharmacist
Amy Myers & Chris Kresser
A range exists (allegedly) to show the highest and lowest acceptable readings for the TSH before treatment should start. You are over the top, you need treatment, your doctor needs lessons in basic arithmetic.
To feel anything like well, a "normal" person's TSH should be <1
Hi guys, I'm sorry I've been so long in replying but it took a while to get the results back on my second test. I took the advise given on here and had my test first thing in the morning and this time my TSH was 11.23. My aunt (who also has hypothyriodism and knows a lot more about this than me) says that this is quite high, but she is also surprised that they are only starting me on 25mcg of Levothyroxine when she was started on 100mcg of Levothyroxine. I wonder whether they are aiming to keep my TSH levels just below 10? My aunt says I should be fighting this and going private to an endocrinologist but that sounds like it's going to involve a lot more energy than I have right now. What are other people's thoughts on this?
