Ferritin etc

Hi I am not feeling at all well and my periods have become longer and heavier and more painful. I have other problems as well as that like straining to go to the toilet and gaining weight around my middle. I find it hard to concentrate at work and am forgetting things and I get shaky and feeling sick when I miss my lunch due to working through it. Are these all caused by low thyroid or something else? Doctor has only given me 800iu to supplement vitamin D which I have been taking since 2013.

TSH 44 mIU/L (0.27 - 4.20)

Free T4 9.7 pmol/L (12 - 22)

TPO 185 IU/mL (<34)

Ferritin 7 ng/L (15 - 150)

Folate 4.1 ng/L (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 226 pg/L (190 - 900)

Total OH vitamin D 38.5 nmol/L (>75 adequate)

Thank you for reading

Hi Kirstie.

Is this the same post? Repeated by mistake?

I will continue to reply on your other post as that's where further information is. Just seen your last reply.

Main thing, I guess, is at least you are now on the Levothyroxine and will be retested in 6 weeks time.

You are now entitled to free prescriptions (whatever the reason) as you will be on the Levothyroxine for the rest of your life. Make sure your GP fills in the form for this.

Can't find all these results on your other post ???

What date/dates were all these blood tests taken ?

Would be good if you could add the last four tests (nutrients ) to your other posts with dates of all tests.

I would also suggest that you post all results in particular B12 and Folate on Pernicious Anemia forum for their expert advice.

As you can see your Ferritin, Folate and B12 levels are ALL low. Ferritin and Folate BELOW range. These need to be addressed by a GP who listens to you and your symptoms (take a written list in with you) AND who acts upon symptoms and clinical findings in your blood tests.

Can you make an appointment with the most agreeable / approachable GP in.the practice?

I would be asking GP to test MMA first, before commencing on prescribed Folic Acid. BUT would suggest you put above post on Pernicious Anemia and add a mention that you are now on Levothyroxine & dose, yet you have only been prescribed Vitamin D - no other nutrients and no mention of B12 injections either. They can best advise you what to say to GP regarding Folate and B12.

You could also look up the deficiencies on NHS choices if you wish.

Regarding an up to date scan? Well , no harm in asking. Prioritise your list after advice from Pernicious Anemia people.

About Ferritin, you will know that iron tablets may cause constipation so I would definitely start on the Lactulose and Fybogels asap. You could add a little fresh orange juice to stop Fybogels going thick.

You should be able to get these free on prescription now as often as you need them. Please don't take other laxatives as they can cause problems such as dehydration which will make constipation / straining worse.

If possible increase iron in diet. Eat liver if you like it /can and add lots of young spinach leaves to your salads.

Will check your other thread in case I've missed anything.

All the best for GP appointment. Be firm but careful. Don't give up going back till you have everything you need and are on the road to good health.

Kirstie - the thyroid results have been commented on in your previous thread.

Ferritin 7 ng/L (15 - 150)

Ferritin should be half way through it's range. What has your GP said? If he's not mentioned it then make an urgent appointment to discuss it.

Have you had full blood count, iron panel and haemoglobin tested? Those are needed to see if you have iron anaemia.

An iron infusion is called for with such a low ferritin so you should ask your GP about that.

If you have iron anaemia the treatment will be a bit different from if you have just low ferritin so that needs clearing up.

If you're given iron tablets, take each one with 1000mg Vit C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation. Take iron four hours away from thyroid meds and two hours away from any other medication and supplements as it affects their absorption.

Eating liver once a week, 200g maximum, plus including lots of iron rich foods can help too. You can google for those, I don't have the link I normally give on this PC.

Folate 4.1 ng/L (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 226 pg/L (190 - 900)

You are folate deficient.

Do you have any signs and symptoms of B12 deficiency - b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

Please take these results, your ferritin result (and any iron results) and any signs of B12 deficiency over to the Pernicious Anaemia Society forum here on Health Unlocked for further advice, then see your GP to discuss it.

Total OH vitamin D 38.5 nmol/L (>75 adequate)

The recommended level is 100-150nmol/L according to the Vit D Council.

800iu never will raise your level adequately, which has been proved since you've been taking it since 2013 and you are still deficient.

You would be better off buying your own D3 softgels like these

bodykind.com/product/2463-b...

and taking 10,000iu daily for 6 weeks, then reduce to 5000iu daily, and retest after 3 months, privately if necessary with City Assays vitamindtest.org.uk/index.html

When you've reached the recommended level you'll need a maintenance dose which might be 5000iu alternate days, it's trial and error. It's recommended to retest once or twice a year when supplementing to keep within the recommended range.

When supplementing with D3 there are import cofactors needed - vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds - naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

Check out the other cofactors too.
