I recently had a blood test and as my ferritin levels were low and still dropping, I asked one of the GP's through the receptionist (couldn't get an appointment for 2 weeks to ask him) if I should start taking Ferrous Fumarate which I had some of from last year when I was prescribed them from the surgery. My recent results were March 2016 40 (20-291) July 2016 35 Feb 2017 26 June 2017 22
He asked me to have a blood test so I arranged one first thing (9.20am) and didn't take any meds and fasted from the night before except for water
My results were 23ug/L (20-291)
I am not happy to have it just in range but also concerned that he will try to reduce my T4 as my results are as follows
TSH 0.18 (0.55-4.8) Free T4 20pmo/L (9.0-23.0) Vit B12 328ng/L (211-911) Serum folate 5.3ug/L (20-291)
Serum total 25-hydroxy vitamin D level 62nmol/L (>51) Vat D concentration >50nmol/L adequate for optimal bone health
I am taking 4000 IU Colecalciferol per day but am at the end of my 3 month's supply. This was prescribed when my Vat D count was <30. It then rose to 46 and is now 50. I have read that it should be around 540 to 60 so I guess he might stop prescribing this
I may have a further battle on Friday when I see the end but he wasn't interested in ferritin results and told me to see my GP about this. I am just half way through my second month of levy (100 mcg)
Just wondered what your thoughts are about levels as I feel I will have a fight on to keep my current medication and think I may need iron too. Last year my iron levels fell very low and they were quick to have me checked out for stomach or bowel cancer and when the results were negative, said it was just anaemia. I then paid privately for a general check up and they picked up my enlarged thyroid at the top of a lung scan. Thyroid problems are in the family, my sister had a thyroidectomy as did my mum who also had Pernicous Anaemia. I have been told I definitely don't have that.
Sorry it is so long but hopefully someone can tell me if I am over-reacting. I just keep reading so much about how doctors don't realise how much of an effect it can have e on a person.
By the way, when I was prescribed the Vitamin D, I asked the consultant if I should also take Vitamin K2 and he hadn't heard of taking them together. He wouldn't prescribe it but said he would look into it. He was very scathing about Thyroid UK and said Oh! they are wanting donations - as though it was a scam.
