I have no idea what to eat!

Some hypo stuff says to eat seaweed, probiotic diary and cruciferous vegs and others have said avoid iodine foods. So depressed. Got on the scales and heaviest ever still going up. Feel pretty awful. Wanna cry. What can I eat for health! tempted to just stop eating at all.

Feelshitnfat,

Eat anything you like except unfermented soy food and drink which are bad for thyroid and health in general. You'd have to eat a huge amount of raw cruciferous veg to affect your thyroid. There's no need to avoid iodine in food either although you shouldn't supplement iodine.

I think that food is an individual thing so I could tell you what has worked for me and what were my trigger foods for symptoms and you could be completely different. I would suggest that you read the rather better balanced opinions of doctors that have studied nutrition, whether medical doctors or PHDs, and be wary of bloggers and personal stories unless they sound like you and your issues. But what ever you do don't see food as the enemy or a fancy diet as the only thing that will help you. Do you have autoimmune thyroiditis or the nonimume version? Some of the dietary suggestions are specific to autoimmune issues.

Hey you are just starting out on your journey.

Until you get optimally medicated - and that will take a few months to over a year - then just concentrate on eating a diet with limited processed food - in other words make most of your food yourself.

Yes it is worth researching different diets but as cwill said make sure the people are medical doctors who have studied nutrition or have PhDs in Nutrition from well-known and well-regarded institutions. The last bit is important due to such people as "Dr" Gillian Mckeith.

I was referred to a highly qualified nutritionist once to try and find out why I had a large multi-nodular goitre, yet was still very healthy in all other ways. She was an idiot and I'll tell you why. She had never heard of goitregenic foods; did not know that soya is bad for the goitre; had no idea why I would want to avoid gluten and was unaware of links between sugar and a whole host of ailments. These are just the ones I can remember as I have tried to erase my memory of the whole pointless exercise. Still (in all modesty) I would like to think that she learned something from our encounter!

I wish you the very best of luck!

I agree with peteRad and had the same experience. Auto immune thyroid and goitre, but now feel very well. I am better since going properly gluten free. (Easier, especially when friends come, since finding Shipton Mill Gf who deliver, and River Cottage GF book by Naomi Devlin.) I never buy the GF junk food out there. I stick to good quality protein, good fats (organic butter, coconut oil, organic extra virgin olive oil) pulses, nuts, veg, salad, fruit, and get probiotics from natural yogurt.. I cut down on sugar .Dr Patrick Kingsley - good info on youtube- urged me to take iodine. I don't always manage it but a 50%+ raw food diet suggested too.I take a couple of good supplements a day too. Juicing good.
