Debi1402 can you show the reference ranges please, or type results and ranges in your post.

Is there a result for ferritin and Vit D?

It takes a while and doctors are pretty slow and will often treat to the blood test rather than the symptoms. I eventually lost the plot and told them they need to treat the symptoms as they are whats endangering my health and quality of life. I would say its pretty rough being a guy with a thyroid disorder, what resources there are focus on women and there is even less research on it in men, especially for non auto immune.

I have eventually ended up taking double what for a long time my blood tests showed as sufficient. The main difference being I take it twice a day now morning and evening. That made a big difference to my energy levels. Taking a decent multi vitamin thats good on D, B12 and Iron helps sometimes.

One thing I would say helps me is exercise. Its the last thing you want to do, but it really does help. I do an hour in the pool as often as I can and its a big energy boost.

I don't have my own results in front of me so without the ranges for reference I can't really tell what those results mean off the top of my head. Basically the ranges tell you what you need or supposedly so. For me if my TSH isnt in the almost hyperthyroid side of the range I feel crap.

Warriorscot - multis are generally a waste of time, they frequently use the wrong and least absorbable form of ingredients, often not enough of anything to help, and if they contain iron then that cancels out everything else as iron needs to be taken a couple of hours away from other supplements and medication (and four hours away from thyroid meds).

Much better to test and supplement where needed.

Hence why I said decent, the better mens multivitamins are spilt throughout the day with 2 or 3 pills. And there are multiple products in the market to match your needs. There is no need to be taking 5 or 6+ horsepills on top of your prescription a day.

If you buy good quality products and don't cheap out then you can certainly get what you need and its far from a waste of time.

My own gp was the one to reccomend taking them( and what to look for) after blood work showed deficiencies and the result after 6 weeks was confirmed again by test so I'll take that empirical evidence over your opinion.

Not just my opinion, look at the ingredients of many multis and you'll see tiny amounts of ingredients, plus many wrong forms such as cyanocobalamin, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, folic acid, etc.

It's advised generally that vitamins should be taken in the morning and minerals in the evening, so they shouldn't be combined.

We shouldn't take calcium and/or iodine unless tested and found to be deficient.

As I said, iron cancels out anything else.

And I wouldn't trust any doctor to know anything about vitamins and minerals unless they proved to me they'd actually studied them. It's not something they learn about during their training.

Get real, unless you are a qualified nutritionist yourself you don't have much standing to criticise a doctor for not having a degree in nutrition and you certainly shouldn't disregard their opinions out of hand. Heaven forbid a medical doctor would study nutrition as part of their cpd. Of the last four gps I've had two of them were doing nutritional advice for the whole practice. And I've yet to have a GP that I would say was ignorant of nutrition, for the younger ones nutrition is something they do study right from the beginning of their training.

Why are you droning on you clearly didn't read my reply. I described that a decent multivitamin is usually two or three pills across a day. You described the reason well, but it's not really relevant as I'm happy with my own set up now and in the past ,given I have empirical proof of efficacy I'm happy. I was speaking of my OWN experience to the OP.

For the OP as I said do your research, take qualified advice, and don't penny pinch. If you really want you can take multiple single vitamins and minerals. Or you can just buy a high quality am pm mens health supplement that matches the requirements needed and packages it up in an easy to use package thats easy to take and works well, there are suitable products for either or a mix of both. From the perspective of actually having been a 26 year old man with a thyroid condition not so long ago the am pm mens supplements worked well when I had similar issues and importantly were easy to maintain. As a scientist myself I was satisfied with my physicians advice and the product selected with their assistance and the test results bore that out. It was IMO far better than the alternative that was at the time 6 massive pills from questionable supply chains across the day on top of my twice daily thyroxine. Being able to take 3 with meals made life and taking them a lot easier from my perspective of at the time being at the time a late twenties man in a busy professional job.

You could also do what I do now and just improve his diet and as I said regular exercise helps a lot with energy levels. But when I was 26 the supplement was the easier option.
