If you are hyper we have to block and replace so that we can find out what has caused what is wrong with your thyroid.

Can they not do it another way?

Many thanks in anticipation of your support. Val

VBgr,

False. B&R with Levothyroxine and Carbimazole is a treatment not diagnostic. An alternative way of treating hyperthyroidism is Carbimazole only.

Thyroid scan &/or Radioactive Iodine Uptake scans (RAIU) is often used to diagnose why a patient is hyperthyroid.

Other investigations may include testing thyroid stimulating immunolglobin antibodies or thyroid receptor antibodies to confirm or rule out Graves Disease.

Thank you Clutter. It's better to know what you are up against. I have had a scan and have been told it's not sinister. I presume they mean that there is no cancer, good news. Val

I'd be most interested to know. I guess if they block they might have to replace. I assume they have to block or remove / destroy the thyroid? Any chance you could ask them for details and post here? If nothing else the answer will give you an indication of their knowledge and skill level.

Hi Jim, I see my doc in 4 weeks for blood tests and will ask then. I am now down to approx.48. Of T4. When I have bloods again I am hopeing for a reading of 30. If this is the case, I think I should drop from 40 CMZ a day to a maintenance dose of 5 so I don't go too low. Perhaps this won't be taken on board with doc but I shall try. My only knowledge of thyroid problems is by reading this great forum. Val
