Has anybody else read this Article-

It was shared on a Facebook page im a member of-

Hypothyroid Uk.

The thing that came up was that in the comment 2 ladies said,

That they were worried about theirs being stopped which took my interest as i was led to believe that Nobody in the UK was able to receive 'free' T3 medication.

Would be grateful to hear others View + also comment if u are able to get T3 on Perscription either free or at the standard Perscription charge & include whereabouts u live.

Im totally dumbfounded as my life has been a daily struggle since iv been on just Levothyroxine (the last 22yrs as i was Only able to get T3 for the first 5yrs)

Thank u 🤐

Hi - prescribing of t3 has been tightened up in recent years due in part to the price exploitation by the current sole supplier to the NHS and also the guidelines issued by the BTA (I think that is right but might be the other one!) that says t3 is not really required and t4 is best treatment.

I believe that in recent years it has really only been endos who have been able? to recommend t3, but generally been down to GP to then prescribe. Because of the cost now involved a lot of GPs have baulked at this and did everything they could to not actually prescribe. We are now in a situation where the regional bodies who buy health services from the GPs - the central commissioning groups or CCGs - are now saying that they are not prepared to pay for it and hence it is, to all intents and purposes, being banned from NHS prescription, one area at a time.

Yes there are still some people receiving t3 on prescription, but there are many others who have already had it withdrawn. Still others have been warned recently that it will be withdrawn in the near future. I don't believe it will be too long before no-one (other than by exception because of fairly extreme circumstances) will be able to get t3 on NHS.

And yes there are multiple petitions and submissions in progress or already submitted about this and I believe lobbying going on.

So you are not being lied to - just maybe in an early adopter area.

Gillian

PS - to anyone reading - if I have got some of my facts wrong or not quite correct, please don't shoot me down - just trying to explain through my recall of the situation from many different posts! More about the spirit rather than exact details.

I do get it prescribed and have been on T3 (liothyronine) only for nearly fifteen yrs until I added a little T4 back in a few months ago but I am getting very worried about it now it's under review lol!

It depends on your area but I think most can only be initiated by endo if at all although GP can continue the prescription.

Check the rules in your local area - mine is this which states initiated by secondary care only (endo):
