I wonder how many here take DHEA and, if so, how much?

The Hertoghe doctors all seem to prescribe it to anyone over 40, to raise your DHEA levels to what they looked like in your early 20s which is when they normally peak...however, I have been reading some conflicting information about the usefulness of DHEA. According to some hormone specialists, DHEA should not be taken unless you have a true deficiency (below range levels), and not be seen as a fountain of youth...also, one article I read recommended 1-5 mg daily of DHEA for women, which is a lot less than the 20-25 mg daily prescribed by many hormone doctors in Belgium...

I'm on my third attempt with DHEA

I have Addison's so I'm guessing my levels are low (also had my ovaries out, while the gynaecologist was 'in there', approved by my endocrinologist, not sure that was a good move, in hindsight)

I have mentioned DHEA to my endocrinologist, but he won't help

I'm now thinking I should talk to my GP to get my levels done

Anyway, first time I think my dose was too high and although I felt a positive effect I became very greasy and spotty

I lowered the dose to 25mg and still the same, so I stopped

I've just started again on 25mg, probably 5 days in and all good so far

I have read it's best to start on 5mg and build up, along with getting all your sex hormones checked, but it's a new area for me so I'll be watching for more replies here

Have you by any chanced experienced insomnia on DHEA? I tried 5 mg of DHEA yesterday for the first time.

Anybody for that matter?

No, I sleep ok

I've 'gone greasy' again so going to try reducing my dose or the frequency

Where did you get your 5mg from?

Hi Annie

Can you advise which hormones to check and when?

Thanks :-)

Hi sue

Sorry, I don’t know

I haven’t got around to the GP yet, too much going on at home

no worries, I followed some advice here and found I have had most of the tests already :-)

i have it on prescription - 12.5mg a day

Thanks to all for your comments! I have a prescription as well but DHEA is horrendously expensive in Belgium, plus available at a fraction of that cost on several reputable sites...but I think that 25 mg was too much for me anyway, and that I should restart it taking a much lower dose. I read that DHEA can convert to any sex hormone, and not always in the right amounts, meaning you can end up estrogen dominant or testosterone dominant depending on which hormone(s) DHEA is converted to...

I've been recommended to take 15mg of DHEA by two doctors now. A professor endocrinologist and also a private functional doctor.

Dr Peatfield's book states that DHEA is needed at a cellular level to ensure normal receptor uptake of thyroid hormone. My DHEA levels were very low in a saliva and a DHEA-S blood test.

Do you know if its okay to take it with your thyroid meds? I read some old posts and it seems people have done so but I'm not sure and wanted to check. Anybody?

elvera111,

You can check the status of Oestrodiol, Progesterone and Testosterone through a blood test via Medichecks. I did their HRT and Testosterone test on day 21 of my cycle.

If you're menopausal or post-menopausal you could order slightly different ones. However, I think the ones I took give a good idea of their status.

I had a DHEA-S blood test done separately at the lab where my endocrinologist works.

Hello, elvera111. I hope you are feeling well today? I was interested to see that a professor of endocrinology had recommended DHEA to you as recently as two months ago, as I have been encountering horrendous problems with my GP refusing to prescribe it. Did you ever achieve a prescription, and have you managed to have it filled? I'd be very grateful for any information you feel able to share on this. Best wishes.

Hi, The prof agreed dhea would be a good idea depending on bloods taken that day. he then discharged me as he wasnt willing to treat me for thyroid problems. When the results came back so low i got in touch with my gp who said the prof needed to prescribe it. It will take months to get another app... i looked into lab testing it would come to £130 altogether. I know i am defnatley low in testesterone , no body hair, i think also eostrogen as no libido. Howeve,r a £13 bottle of DHEA and then £39 afterwards is more affordable. Thinking one month on 25mgs shouldnt do to much harm

I have been prescribed DHEA by a private doc in the form of transdermal cream made by a compounding pharmacy; the DHEA also has some testosterone - no recognition of any change thus far (2 weeks). Doc. thought it might take a month for any changes to be noticeable. I had loads of tests done privately before my consultation: low oestregon, high progesterone and high middle testosterone but very low DHEA. Also high SHBG.
