Hi

I take 800iu D3, 210mg ferrous fumarate for iron deficiency treated in 2016 with iron infusion (ferritin was 12 in range of 15 - 150) 5mg folic acid. Do levels need correcting? Advice appreciated.

Ferritin 97 (15 - 400)

MCV 78.1 (80 - 98)

Folate 3.7 (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin D 44.7 (25 - 50 vitamin D deficiency)

Vitamin B12 263 (190 - 900)

Ferritin 97 (15 - 400) - this recommended level is half way through it's range so you have a fair way to go.

MCV 78.1 (80 - 98) - this can iron deficiency anaemia and the treatment would be one Ferrous Fumarate two or three times daily.

Take each iron tablet with 1000mg Vit C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation.

Take iron four hours away from thyroid meds and two hours away from any other medication and supplements as it affects their absorption.

Folate 3.7 (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 263 (190 - 900)

Please post these results on the Pernicious Anaemia Society forum here on Health Unlocked for further advice, mentioning that you are taking folic acid and give information about your iron/ferritin levels and treatment. B12 is low. If you have any signs of B12 Deficiency include those also:

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

Vitamin D 44.7 (25 - 50 vitamin D deficiency)

800iu D3 daily won't raise your level, it is barely a maintenance dose for someone with a reasonable level to start with. Your GP probably won't prescribe any more because the guidelines say 800iu.

You would be better off buying some D3 softgels like these

bodykind.com/product/2463-b...

and take 5000iu daily for 3 months then retest, privately if necessary with City Assays

vitamindtest.org.uk/index.html

When you've reached the recommended level of 100-150nmol/L reduce to 5000iu alternate days, maybe less in summer, and retest once or twice a year to keep within the recommended range, adjusting dose when necessary.

When taking D3 there are important cofactors needed which you can read about here

vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, four hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium comes in different forms, check here to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds.

Check out the other cofactors too.

All vitamins and minerals need to be at optimal levels for thyroid hormone to work.

Hi Kylie

Your levels are dire so the supplements clearly not helping much at all and you need to work out why so low in the first place unless you starve yourself to death lol. It is more likely stomach/absorption issues - do you have any digestive problems?

Also I would add that ferritin can be misleading especially when B12/folate deficient so have you got a full blood count as this can give more indications of what you're deficient in as mcv still indicates you have iron aneamia? Problem is B12/folate anaemia masks iron anaemia and iron anaemia masks B12/folate anaemia.

Also pins and needles are an indication of B12 deficiency so likely to be deficient in this too as levels are low.
