Morphine bad reaction...

Hi All,

So yesterday I had a general anaesthetic for a quick surgery to remove some scaring that's gone a bit funny. It was originally going to be done under a local anaesthetic but I had a panic attack (woops) so they stopped it and re scheduled it yesterday.

Surgery went fine but....afterwards when I was in the recovery room a nurse gave me morphine for the pain. She gave me 18mg. I was off my face.

They wouldn't let me home, rightly so, I spent the night projectile vomiting, incredibly dizzy, disorientated etc etc. I got discharged this morning and now home feeling a little bit like I've been run over.

Anyway I've two questions...I couldn't take my Euthyral until 10am so is that going to mess things up?

Why did I react so badly to morphine, I've had it before...did they just give me way too much?

Will the morphine effect my thyroid?

Thanx all from a slightly high, dizzy, still nauseated member of this group. X

I have understood morphine is well tolerated compared to other drugs. Tho its an opiate anyway and can have side effects like histamine release. My sister in law got Fentanyl which is more potent and felt sick for three days until it wore off.

It is rare to react to Morphine, it is much more likely you reacted to the anaesthetic which can leave many people feeling sick, drunk and out of it for a few days. Just rest, sleep and drink a lot of water to flush it out of your system. It is a horrible feeling, I know - I had the taste of dry cleaning fluid for 3 days (not that I have tasted dry cleaning fluid, just the smell in the shop!). Hope you feel better soon.
