I would appreciate some help with these results, please.

I recently had some blood tests done at the GP surgery which showed low Vit D and B12. Only the TSH was done. At the time the TSH was 1.1 mlU/L. As I was taking meds for acid reflux which could affect absorption I was advised to stop taking the meds and re-test in 6 weeks. As there was no T3 T4 etc I did some Medicheck thyroid tests as well as B12. The thyroid results are back and printed below.

ENDOCRINOLOGY

Thyroid Function

THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE 0.516 mIU/L 0.27 - 4.20

FREE THYROXINE 19.86 pmol/L 12.00 - 22.00

TOTAL THYROXINE(T4) 125.5 nmol/L 59.00 - 154.00

FREE T3 4.78 pmol/L 3.10 - 6.80

Thyroid Antibodies

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY 19.350 IU/mL 0.00 - 115.00

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES

*

58.74 IU/mL 0.00 - 34.00

I would appreciate some help in interpreting these results, especially the antibodies.

The TSH has dropped to nearly half of what it was two weeks ago. I did expect a slight change as I was off the reflux meds but would the change be so dramatic in just two weeks off the meds? Will the changes continue the longer I am off the reflux meds and will the T4 T3 levels have changed.

I am now gluten free so will the antibody levels change over the coming weeks?

I find it all so confusing and just as I think I have got it straight in my mind I lose track of it all again! Probably a combination of getting old and Hashi!

I am hoping for a change in the B12 level due to not taking the reflux meds...watch this space...results due in 2 days.

Thanks.

Ask GP to test vitamin D & ferritin too. Folate should be tested with B12. Common for these four to be low with Hashimotos.

Magnesium levels can also be affected by PPI's if been on them a while. Low magnesium affects vitamin D uptake

More likely that you have low stomach acid when have Thyroid issues. Has very similar symptoms but very different treatment.

Masses of posts on here about low stomach acid - how to diagnose & how to treat

Thank you SlowDragon.

Vit D levels were low in tests two weeks ago. I am now on Vit D supplements.

The folates were low too, not sure how to improve that.

Ferritin levels were not tested but Medichecks are including that in the B12 tests, results due any day now.

Having read about stomach acid I realise that I may be low. Now that I am off the reflux meds which I have taken for four years, hopefully, that will improve.

As I said before, I am being retested for B12 at the GP surgery in four weeks so I don't want to make too drastic changes before that.

However, I already have the Solgar B12 and B complex plus two bottles of Braggs ACV with Mother all set to go.

Don't supplement B12 or folate or B complex before that test

But once you start B12, it's recommended we also take good B complex (with folate in rather than cheaper folic acid)

That will keep all the B's in balance & also improve folate as well

Look at posts about magnesium on here.

Thank you Slowdragon. Having had such good advice from Gillybean I will not be taking any supplements before the retests.

I will investigate the magnesium.
