Recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism after pregnancy . I am currently taking 15mg of carbimazole daily . I've continued breast feeding as my doctors say it's fine in a low dosage . Can we he hyperthyroidism be passed on through breast. Milk ? Has anyone here continued breast feeding whilst having hyperthyroidism ?

Welcome to our forum but am sorry you have hyperthyriodism due to pregnancy. Some women do have a dysfunction of their thyroid gland after delivery. I am sure your doctors are correct but members who have hyperthyroidism will respond when they read your post, if they also developed it after pregnancy.

I am not medically qualified but doubt that hyperthyroidism can be passed on through breastfeeding. In the meantime I'll give two links which may be of help.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've developed postpartum hyperthyroidism. I've not been pregnant yet but have researched it as i want to be at some point. My understanding is that excess thyroid hormone can't be transmitted, neither through the placenta or in the milk

However if you have Graves Disease it is possible that your baby has temporary hyperthyroidism as a result of them taking your antibodies. But it will pass as their own immune system develops. Then with the anti-thyroid in the milk i believe carbimazol is safest for breastfeeding but I'm not that knowledgeable there. I'd highly recommend Elaine Moore

She has a website and books with very useful info all about hyperthyroidism and she comes onto her website and answers

(sorry got cut off) questions from hyperthyroid patients, including people who've had pregnancy and baby questions. You might find what you're looking for by searching the existing answers on her members forum. Best of luck

Thank you for all your responses , they are very helpful . I keep thinking that something might happen to him because I've continued to breast feed ! I will look up those sites . My endocrinologist has now prescribed PTU instead .

Happasamy2016,

You can't pass on hyperthyroidism to your baby via breast milk but the Carbimazole may be passed on and your baby become hypothyroid so his thyroid levels should be regularly checked.

Edit: Just seen that you have been switched to PTU which doesn't cross the milk barrier so no need to worry about your baby.
