hypothyroidism converted to hyperthyroidism
Do you have copies of your labs to share with us? It's difficult to know what's going on, otherwise.
If you have autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashi's), it doesn't actually 'convert' to hyperthyroidism in the normal sense of the word.
Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid gland is making too much hormone.
Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland is not making enough hormone.
But, what happens with Hashi's, is that the gland is attacked by antibodies, and as the cells die off, they release all their hormone into the blood stream. This temporarily raises levels of hormone in the blood. But, that does not mean that you are clinically hyper, because your gland is not producing it normally. And, it is temporary. You will eventually go back to being hyper. So, normally, NeoMercazonle is not the right treatment.
What you need to do is keep a very close eye on your hormone levels, so that you can stop the medication when the levels decrease and you become hypo again. Then, you will need thyroid hormone replacement, such as levothyroxine.
Do you live in the UK?
Dear Gregoose
Many thanks for your reply. Sorry for late reply as I was confused with my multiple heath issues and seems to be that doctor does not understand my case. I live in Zurich, Switzerland.
Summarizing follow up of treatment:
26.04.2017 TSH, basal * 34.32
14.04.2017 TSH, basal * 12.6 stopped Neo Mercazole (even though doctor
recommended to sty 10mg a day)
12.03.2017 TSH, basal * 0.03 Neo Mercazole 1mg per day
4.03.2017 TSH, basal * 0.002 Neo Mercazole 15mg per day
02.05.2016 TSH, basal * 0.07 my doctor recommended to reduced Eutyhrox
from 0.075 to 0.050 when I had a hypothyroid THS 9 plus
Diet: meat, fish, chicken and cheese protein intolerance when eaten, I can't sleep and day later getting kidney relapse known as minimal change disease (MCD). Presently, also gluten, dairy and lactose free diet since 18.2.2017.
Following my last stomach biopsy test on 3.4.2017 came with positive h-pylori,
my doctor put on me 2x a day on antibiotics for 14 days from 15.4:
1. Amoxicillin Sandoz 1000mg
2. Ciprofloxacin 500mg
3. Pantoprazole 40mg
Previously on 22.10.2015 I had a Rituximab therapy to kill B cell depletion in order to stay free of immune suppression medicine due to kidney disorder the fact lasted for 6 months.
Any advise, will be appreciated.
Thank you for your response. At present no thyroid med. the Neo Mercazole stopped at TSH 12.6 on 14.04.2017 against the recommendation of doctor. Last March, I was told by University Hospital Zurich that my Hashi converted to Graves. Even after stopping taking Neo Mercazole my THS still moving up.
Best regards,
Manzoor
