Switching from T4/T3 combo to NDT - Advise please.

Hello my little guru's :-)

Please could someone help with the change over of meds as I feel like tearing my hair out!

Below were my last bloods - and I know they need to be raised, but I have frozen shoulder surgery in 4 weeks time and if my TSH is too low, they wont operate, but I have run out of patience with fatigue and brain fog.

I was taking 50mgs levo + 20mgs T3 ( As my Iron came up, I felt overdosed on T3, so dropped to 15mgs).

TSH 1.2 Range ( 0.4 - 5.5 )

T4 13.7 Range ( 11.5 - 22.7)

T3 3.8 Range ( 3.5 - 6.5)

I have also been tested for weak positive for celiac - but have to keep eating gluten until they run the tests which is at least 6 weeks away.

I am taking folic acid and Iron as it was too low, (two weeks now) and I am taking all the supplements that were mentioned, vit D, B12, zinc, etc.

Yesterday, I took 1 grain of Nature Thyroid in the AM, then half a grain, 5 hours later. I felt great until 6pm, then the body pain was awful! I felt overdosed physically - but not mentally, but I've been awake since 5 am. ( No heart hammering either).

Have I taken too much?

Could someone please tell me how many grains I should be taking on NDT based on 15mgs of T3 and 50mgs T4?

I would have thought as I have already been on T3, that I would be able to take the direct T3 without the 'going up too fast' body pains.

Could it just be a case of Nature thyroid is more superior, therefore stronger?

Thank you and as always, forever grateful.

Furcoatnoknickers,

I wouldn't switch to NDT this close to your surgery because, as you say, you may be refused surgery if your thyroid levels are off.

50mcg T4 and 15mcg T3 is equivalent to 95mcg T4 which is roughly equivalent to 1.5 grains NDT. There is 13.5mcg T3 in 1.5 grains which is less than the T3 you were taking so whatever the reason you felt bad I don't think it was because of too much T3. You might want to try 1 grain split into 2 doses to start with and increase dose in a couple of weeks but this 'tweaking' may send your thyroid levels off which is why it may be better to wait until after your surgery.
