Help I've taken an extra half a grain by accident

I was half asleep this morning and took extra half. I made myself sick as much as I could. Then proceeded to drink coffee, eat toast with butter and take iron to see if this would limit the damage. I've just done an hours workout too. Any other tips?

I would not worry, any effect would be short lived. At most you might feel a bit more lively and active than usual. Don't take any more drastic action.

Jodypody,

An extra 1/2 grain might have made you feel a little over medicated but wouldn't be damaging. Drinking coffee and eating immediately after was a good idea and will have reduced absorption. It was probably overkill to make yourself sick.

Thyroid hormones are not deadly poison. The most likely effect of an extra half grain is that your heart would have speeded up a bit for a few hours. You wouldn't have been damaged by it.

You could have just reduced your following dose by 1/2 a grain rather than making yourself sick, eating badly, and doing an astonishing amount of exercise.

Thanks all. Just taken my temp and it's 36.5 so I must've done the right things. I exercise for an hour every day anyway so it won't be a shock I'm just aware it'll use up the T3. Let's hope I sleep tonight as I've lots of driving to do tomorrow

For most people, most of the time, thyroid hormones are among the safest of all medicines.

If you overdosed on numerous over-the-counter medicines (like paracetamol or aspirin), you could make yourself very ill. With thyroid hormone, the usual impact of a one-off extra dose is to feel the effect to some extent, then get over it. The most dangerous aspect would likely be if it affected your heart - if you already have heart issues.

Do bear in mind that when testing levothyroxine, it is usual to give healthy people a 600 microgram dose. People who do not need even a single microgram of thyroid hormone. That is regarded as safe approach and has been done for many, many years.

That's reassuring. It's just I took an extra quarter on one occasion felt great all day then couldn't sleep until 2am. I'm a rep so I'm behind the wheel a lot so it's imperative I get a good nights slwep.

This PowerPoint presentation is quite clear about the 600 microgram protocol - and is quite interesting.
