Anosmia Awareness day (no sense of smell).

Just thought I'd mention this for fellow sufferers with impaired senses of smell & taste/flavour (sweet, sour, salty, bitter & umami/savoury are classed as tastes, flavour is combinations of tastes apparently).

There is also such a thing as "smell training". :)

Mine has been impaired since taking a single dementia pill, that was supposed to help my FM symptoms. I am no longer able to taste salt as well, which is a problem as I react badly to it, & worse still, I no longer enjoy the taste of red wine! >:(

What was in that pill?

At one point I didn't realise that someone had left a cupful of salt where the sugar was at work - it took quite a few sips of coffee to realise that something wasn't right. But it's not knowing the gas was still on that scares me :(

Apparently loss of smell can be low zinc also B12. J :D

Memantine. It was a replacement medication for an anti-depressant which was supposed to reduce FM symtoms that I took for a week, & left me terrified to go to sleep for 3 months afterwards because of nightmares. I'm never taking any drugs like that again! I feel sorry for people with dementia who don't have a choice in what they take.

Who puts salt in a cup?!? I've not got as bad as mistaking sugar & salt, & can detect a sweetness in himalayan salt rather than the saltiness. I previously hated the stuff as it makes my fingers puffy.

I take zinc & have increased my B12 with sublingual, so my issue is solely a medical side effect. I miss enjoying a nice glass of red, but can still taste beer the same. :D

eek - just looked it up & side effects include swelling of hands & feet, others are worse.

That didn't happen, but my jaw locked up completely the morning after the first tablet. It causes bruxus in 1% of people taking it. That eased off within a week, but my taste never returned.
