I have been taking a low dose (50mg) of 5-HTP for nearly 6 years. I know some people take a lot more than I do. I would suggest, at least to begin with, taking it up to an hour before bed, but don't be scared to experiment.

I don't have Hashi's, and I take it for depression rather than anxiety.

Start on about 1/4 grain and build up over a few weeks unless you are used to T3. DON'T do a direct swap as it rarely works. I'm sure doctors tell you to do do this so they can say they ruled it out!

I have taken it 100mg and higher usually in the winter for seasonal affective disorder and found it very helpful. Take at night and it helps you sleep

Taken for insomnia, either 50mg or 100mg. 100mg can leave me feeling a bit drowsy next day, but hey, I'll have slept.

I took 5-htp for years before I was diagnosed, it helped with sleep and low level but constant anxiety. I forgot about it and recently reintroduced it when insomnia became unbearable and anxiety returned. BUT I tested my neurotransmitter and amino acid levels first. I find a small amount of delayed release 5-htp achieves an ease in body and mind that leads to better relaxation and ultimately better sleep. I also take melatonin and gaba for the insomnia/anxiety issues.

I have previously found relora to be very helpful for daytime anxiety modulation. It is not recommended for low cortisol though.

I am one of those who tried 5HTP for depression, but found it increased anxiety.I find L theanine helps.L tyrosine is effective for some(not me)I have also tried inositol & lysine.

I have tried everything over the years, including acupuncture, homoeopathy, flower essences.

Due to a sudden increase in chronic anxiety to a state of daily severe anxiety & panic states,I am taking Sertraline. It is really helping.

Thanks all. This sounds positive as I'm also considering 5-HTP as I'm struggling a bit (depression and intermittent anxiety) and a naturopath has mentioned that it might help. Awaiting full bloods (through her, not the NHS, needless to say :) ) before we supplement with anything, but this is encouraging. x
