I posted a couple of weeks ago regarding my very unhelpful GP and my long list of symptoms. The NHS blood test I had done at the time (after lunch) showed:
TSH = 5.9mu/L range 0.35-5
Free T4 = 12.8pmol/L range 9-24
The doctor wasn't willing to listen to my symptoms or pursue this further so as per all of your recommendations I paid for a Blue Horizon thyroid 11 test (which was done first thing) and results have come back as:

CRP 2.40 (<5.0 mg/L)

TSH H 8.48 (0.27 - 4.20 mIU/L)
T4 Total 101.1 (64.5 - 142.0 nmol/L)

Anti-Thyroidperoxidase abs H 181.6 (<34 kIU/L)

Vitamin D (25 OH) L 36 (Deficient <25 nmol/L, Insufficient 25 - 50)
I found the doctor's notes a little unclear as they refer to someone on medication and I am not. My usual GP doesn't think I have a thyroid problem. From everything I have read I think I have the symptoms of Hashimoto's and think this confirms it?
Any advice on what this means or where to go from here would be gratefully received. I have changed GP's so now need to make sure I understand this all so I can prepare to fight my case with a new doctor!
I have already looked into changing my diet and spent all weekend reading about the autoimmune paleo protocol. I have been strictly gluten-free for 2 years so happy to do whatever it takes to feel well.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.
I would show your BH results to your GP. If s/he is one of the dinosaurs who insists on TSH >10 before commending treatment I strongly recommend you change your GP. Read Dr. Toft's comments about starting treatment to n'ip things in the bud' when thyroid antibodies are positive. thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... I am already gluten free and it helped massively with IBS at the time. I am not sure if my thyroid symptoms were so prominent then, or maybe were disguised by the other problems I was having!
I have the pulse article but it suggests that if TSH is high, T4 in range but with antibodies present then this is a mild form of hypothyroidism. I know it suggests to "nip things in the bud" if antibodies are present but the TSH is under 10 but I don't know if this is likely to happen? The last experience I had with my GP was dire so I have already changed surgeries but I am yet to see them. I am trying to arm myself with enough information.
Hi- your vit d , vit b12 and folate are all too low and won't be helping the situation, either now or if you manage to get your GP to treat your Hashis hypo.
There are lots of threads today on these, but briefly, 5000iu/day vit d3 + take vit k2-mk7 and magnesium, methyl folate preferably as part of a multi B supplement, sublingual 5000 methyl cobalamin b12. These should bring all levels up to where you can make more efficient use of thyroxine, from your own gland or prescribed. Lots of issues around timing of these for max absorption, check other threads.
I already have a shelf full of vitamin and mineral supplements so need to work out exactly what I do need to take and find some more potent ones. I will have a look x
