B12 Supplementing for 3 months

I have been supplementing B12 - 5000 micrograms for 10 weeks, (Jarrow) methylcobalamin. Medicheck result on Oct 20 was 473.5 (191-663). I think I read in a post here that once supplementing no point testing. My question is should I now reduce? Thanks.

I wouldn't reduce. If that is as far as you've got in 10wks it seems like you'd struggle if you were taking less. Normally it is thought to be unhelpful to test when supplementing because we are always over range, but after all this supplementing you are not even near the top. Are you taking any other b vits?

Considering the test was in october, I'm assuming she has been on them since that level and not that she is at that level after all the supplementing so may not be best advice? :-)

Testing after supplementing will skew your result. How was your Folate result ? B12 and folate work together in the body - so a good B Complex would help.

Personally I would keep taking the B12 if Folate is good. Possibly reduce to the 1000 dose. Excess B12 will be excreted.

Thanks everyone for replies. Marz, in Oct my folate was 9.19 (4.6-18.7) Supplementing B Vitamins 10 weeks too, Jarrow B-Right B Complex, also D3 5000 IU, three times a week with MK-7. I'll reduce the B12.

Folate looks good :-) No need to reduce if you feel comfortable with that level of dosage. Do you have many B12 Deficiency symptoms as detailed in the link below... scroll down the page.

Are you symptomatic of B12 deficiency? Testing is going to be skewed by the supplementation. Serum B12 isn't a good test anyway, so symptoms need to be used as a guide.

there is an overlap with thyroid ... and folate as mentioned by Marz ... so being sure what is going on from just serum B12 is going to be difficult.

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. In October when I got my blood tested with Medicheck, I was positive for Hashi. I was seen by an endocrinologist before Xmas but before she treats she wants to rule out other causes, has ordered more bloods tests and won't be seen again until sometime in March to discuss results.

So I began by trying to help myself after receiving suggestions re supplements on this forum. Must admit I am feeling a little better overall. Mood has improved and I have more patience! And I don't get so stressed about problems at work. I'm lucky that I can still work, though spend most of weekend resting! 😊
