Usually it states on supplements to take them with food so I do it at lunchtime.

You are correct that we have to take them apart from any thyroid hormone replacements :)

Hi Gary19610 yes those are correct for B12 and Folate although you will want also want to keep your other B vitamins in check too. I normally use jarrows B Right which contains b vits and Folate but also solgar 5000mcg methylcobalimin sublinguals as they are smaller and dissolve better.

If it is diet or medication that is causing the the low b12 then these will be fine to help boost it but any future b12 testing will useless so prior to supplementing you may want to rule out pernicious anaemia as a cause. To do this you need to have Intrinsic factor anti bodies tested (although you can get a false negative quote often with this test) Pernicious anaemia prevents the absorption of B12 from food through the stomach. Sublinguals can be a little help but pernicious anaemia really needs regular b12 injections for life.

I saw a previous post that your b12 was low 300s (and probably well within range) so getting your gp to agree that it is low and testing for IF antibodies will probably be impossible but once you start supplementing your b12 serum will show as unnaturally high.

Don't suppliment until all b12 tests are completed. Once you start tests are useless and you'll not be able to get treatment prescribed if you need it.

A few tablets can render tests in the following 3-6 months useless.

Once you start without a diagnosis you are pretty much on your own even if things get much worse.

I speak from experience.

Self treatment must be a last last last resort
