Hashis and NDT Can you help please?

Hi everyone I have a question. Please can someone that understands Hashis respond. From what I understand Hashis your immune system attacks your thyroid gland because it sees it as a invader and sets out to attack it. My question is this, NDT is made of the same substance exactly as your thyroid. Does that not mean that your immune system will see it also as an invader also and set out to destroy it in the same way it is trying to destroy your thyroid?

For some people, yes, this is true. But other Hashi's people manage to take NDT without any problem. In any case, NDT doesn't suit everyone - it didn't suit me. I don't know if it was because of my Hashi's, or something else. But, the only way we're ever going to know if it suits us, is to try it. :)

Oh, Hashis as in Hashimotos I thought you were talking about Hasheesh!

But chemically yes, the molecules of T4, T3, T2 and T1 are identical and as gg says there might be some reaction in some people. It will depend upon what your immune system is negatively reacting to. While it might be attacking your thyroid it might not be attacking the hormones the thyroid is producing. I think that the occurrence of an immune reaction to the hormone is pretty low since the production of NDT is enormous and we rarely here of any cases of immune reaction, sorry that is not a very scientific statement. Perhaps that is the reason some people "do not do well" on NDT and they switch to some alternative and we here no more about it.

For what it is worth, I had Hashimotos, I had a total thyroidectomy and I take NDT which returned me to a normal life. I'd say go for it, if it doesn't work switch to Levo or T3 only.
