Vitamin D3 deficiency

I've just had Dr on phone telling me I am Vitamin D deficient. He said my levels were under the NHS lab of 30 (which he says is their range for deficient) and they didn't even register. He is prescribing me 3200 D3, which after reading posts on here, I feel is not enough. I asked him if I should take a loading dose and then a maintenance dose and he said no, just take one of these a day and we'll check again in 3 months. Can anyone suggest a D3 supplement & strength of dose please? I have ordered K2-MK7 already to take with the D3. Good news though is that my HbA1C is near normal so no more Metformin and diabetes could now be history (as long as I keep up my Gluten free, High Protein/Low Carb diet going)

Dahlia17,

I was prescribed 40,000iu D3 x 14 days followed by 2,000iu daily x 8 weeks which raised my vitD from <10 to 107.

I now buy D3 softgel capsules from Amazon to maintain vitD levels. You can buy 5,000iu doses and take 10,000iu daily for 6-8 weeks to raise levels and then reduce to 5,000iu daily for a few weeks and retest. Take vitamin D 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Thanks, I did think it was a low dose for such a deficiency. I'll order some now.

Dahlia17 My suggestion would be for this D3 bodykind.com/product/2463-b... and take a loading dose of 10,000iu daily for 3-4 weeks then reduce to 5000iu daily. Recommended level is 100-150nmol/L so re-test when suggested and see where your level lies then. Once you've reached the recommended level 5000iu alternate days as a maintenance dose should be fine. If you are a sun worshipper and get plenty of sun during the summer - on bare skin with no sunscreen for a period every day, then this should keep you topped up during those months.

Don't forget you need magnesium too

Well done regarding the diabetes. My friend is now off Metformin and her levels now no longer indicate diabetes, she has been supplementing with mulberry leaf capsules which has brought this about :)

Thanks. I already take Magnesium. I have just ordered a higher dose of D3 for delivery tomorrow. I always hated being in the sun as I swelled up with water retention, but as I have dealt with all those related problems all I can say is ROLL ON SUMMER

You may already know this but if you take your vit d with the fattiest meal of the day (or anything with fat in it, a bit of peanut butter or buttered toast etc) it will stick a bit better. I didn't know that and had a really tough time getting my levels up.

I agree that you need to do a loading dose. No idea why your gp wouldn't know that but my vit d result was 10 and my gp had no idea either. No point in messing about longer than necessary, go straight for the loading dose. Up to you of course (you've got enough on your plate I'm sure) but you may also want to print out the guidance notes and drop them at the surgery so your gp can learn something: imperialendo.com/for-doctor...

Good luck!

You are lucky! I finally, after battling with my GP for a VitD test for over a year, managed to get one and then the lab refused to do it! I had one in the end and the result was 7. I was given VitD capsules 800iu, and, not knowing any better, faithfully took them. My symptoms were not getting any better so after around 6 months I asked for another test. "Oh no, you have had one, we dont do it more than once" was the response!

I now double up the prescription, and buy from the chemist.
