Hoping for benefit from Thyroid S tablets

Hi, I'm 57, got primary Sjogren's Syndrome, asthma and sleep apnoea. I am hypothyroid and have been on 100 mg Eutroxsig (T4 synthetic) since 2005. I find it almost impossible to lose weight, even when I eat sensibly and exercise like mad. Have a huge intolerance to heat, and suffer every summer in the Australian climate. I've been looking at trying Thyroid S in place of the Eutroxsig. Today I bought 1000 60mg tabs online from Thailand. What a faff that was - took about two hours to do, what with having to register with an international payments company and emailing/texting the contact in Thailand. Hope they arrive and fingers crossed they'll help me feel better.

Hi - do you have any recent thyroid results you could share with us ? - including ranges. Perhaps some tweaking is required.

Also you need good levels of the following for your thyroid meds to work well - Ferritin - Folate - B12 - VitD. Have they been tested and do you have the results ? Some of the symptoms you mention could be linked to being under treated or low vitamins and minerals.

Hi Marz, thanks for replying. I don't have any recent thyroid test results. My doctor is pretty rigid about results and tends to discount it when I tell her I'm not feeling any better etc. She just repeats the same thing "We'll you're within the range". I just wish she would actually listen to me and not be so hamstrung with 'ranges' etc. I've recently (in the last week) started taking a B vitamin complex and Vit D. I didn't know about folate and ferritin though. Thanks for that info.

In the UK patients are able to have copies of test results under the Data Protection Act. I live in Crete and we keep ALL our medical records :-) You really need to share these results for people to help and advise. Being in range seems to be all Docs care about - but it is WHERE you are in the ranges that is so important. Also you need to know what was tested. So you need to see the results for the TSH - FT4 - FT3 and Thyroid Anti-bodies. The TSH needs to be 1 or under if on treatment and the FT4 and FT3 in the upper part of the range.

It is possible you are not converting the 100 of Levo into the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3. This is common and only seeing the results with ranges will reveal all.

A B Complex will not give you enough B12. It needs to be taken alone. If you have the B12 tested now the results will be skewed as there is some B12 in the Complex. Still worth doing. B12 works with Folate in the body.

Did you have a result of the VitD before supplementing ? Dosing is often linked to the result.

Apologies if I sound bossy - but we do have to have those results in order to take control of and manage our health ourselves. I would not start something new without having the foundations firmly in place first - good levels of B12 - Ferritin - Folate and VitD. Your dose of 100 is not exactly huge .....

Thanks Marz - and you're not being bossy. I wish my doctor had told me all this years ago😕. Am heading off to U.K. at end of Jan for hols but on return to Oz I'll see my doc and ask for a thyroid function test AND the results in writing. Much appreciated! Cheers

If you are off to the UK - it is possible to have a Home Testing Kit sent to your holiday address. You could do a finger prick test - return in the post - and you will have the results by e-mail VERY quickly. Lots of people here on the forum use this method. It ensures you get exactly what you want done. See below ....

The Thyroid 11 is the one I think - sorry I don't use them as I am in Crete. So it is the FULL Thyroid Profile - plus B12 - VitD - Ferritin - Folate. Then you will be ahead of the game on your return :-)

Come back here with your results in a new post and people will help you and comment. You never know you might get me again :-) :-) Good Luck.

for me personally 1.5 grains was equivalent to100 t4 and at first I had to split the dose and there was a 2-3 mth transition period where I felt a little weird but everyone here said push through it and sooooo glad I did....I couldn't take it all at once at first and had a t3 rush I guess you would say...now though...I no longer have to split and I don't have those rushes anymore....and I am soooo glad I changed.....

Thanks jacrjacr. One question re the Thyroid S tablets. Are we supposed to let them dissolve under the tongue, swallow them whole or chew them?

I'm still relatively new to desiccated thyroid, but I swallow thyroid-s whole and take the whole dose first thing in the morning at least an hour before eating or drinking anything other than water.

Start slowly rather than leaping in with a straight swap - check out the "stop the thyroid madness" website or search this forum and you"ll see lots of hints if your not sure.

I agree with the earlier comment re getting rushes, I got it when I took the first dose and agin when I finally got up to 2 grains. I think it's the hit of T3, but if you hold your nerve and make sure you've got your Vit B, D, iron etc optimal you will hopefully feel a lot better.

Apparently sellenium helps absorbtion of T3 and conversion of T4 to T3 so it might be worth looking into if you're not already supplementing.

Good luck!

Everyone is different, and what works best for you may not be ideal for someone else. I have tried all three methods, but simply swallowing the pills works best for me. I noticed no difference whatsoever when I tried to chew them up or take them sublingually. I don't know if that is because Thyroid-S contains cellulose, and if pills without cellulose (like Thiroyd or Erfa) are more effective if you chew them up or take them sublingually...? Anyway, just swallowing the pills works well for me.

Go by how you feel not numbers. Well done that you will be self medicating! Build up slowly over a few weeks DON'T do a direct swap I'm sure doctors tell you its oOK so they can say they've ruled it out!
