Magnesium...

Like most of us I have sleep issues from time to time...and now is one of them! I have been taking Solgar Magnesium Citrate (400mcg) before bed and rub Mag oil on too, which is working quite well. However I notice I have been going to the loo more often (something you will never hear me complain about :-) ) and I'm wondering if it means I'm taking too much? Also, should I be taking anything with it? Thanks :-)

infomaniac Magnesium citrate is known to have a mild laxative effect.

See if there's another form which might suit you naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

I know Susie - that's why I bought it ;-) However I used to have to take about 8 tablets (1600mcg!!) and sometimes it didn't even work. I am on T3 now and can only assume that's what's making it work better?

Having been constipated most of my life, I am LOVING the novelty of going to the loo !! (Just a bit worried in case I was having too much and it might affect other minerals etc as in your link).

Oooh, another lifelong constipation sufferer!

I take magnesium citrate powder and the recommended dose gives 350mg magnesium. I don't tend to take any more, it helps a bit with a cocktail of other things. I take a lot of Vit C too, plus psyllium husk capsules.

I take T3 in combo with Levo, up to 25mcg at the moment, but not having as much success in the loo department as you :(

Are you gluten free Susie? I found that has helped my digestion a lot too.

No, as I'm not Hashi's I've never considered it.

My partner, who has a gluten intolerance, finds if he does have some gluten (which is not very often) it slows down the transit of food. He will be unable to go to the toilet as he normally does, for up to three days.

Please could you help with t3 information......I am on levothyroxine for 20 years.......hoping to change to all or part t3. How did you decide all t3.? How difficult was the changeover? Thank you so much.

Mary76mary76 The first thing you need is up to date thyroid tests - TSH, FT4 and FT3 done at the same blood draw. Also, you need to know if your vitamins and minerals are at optimal levels so that your thyroid meds can work properly. Best test is bluehorizonmedicals.co.uk/T...

Hopefully your vits and mins will be optimal, if not any deficencies should be addressed.

From the thyroid tests, you can see if T4 is converting to T3 well enough. If poor conversion is obvious then you look at whether a Levo/T3 combo or T3 would be best.

Dr Mercola recommends Magnesium L Threonate which does not have the laxative effect. Anybody else read that?

I've read Mercola on this. He also recommends CoQ10 with it to help absorption I believe.

I would reduce your dose a little. After about a month or two you will have corrected tissue deficiencies and your requirement reduces, the body absorbs less. Also split you dose if you can. Magnesium causes osmotic diarrhoea, it draws water from the colon. If you take all the dose in one go you will localise this action. Spreading the dose will spread out this effect.

Thanks everyone. The extra trips to the loo aren't a problem for me (it's not diarrhoea) so I'm just going to keep on what I'm doing for the moment :-)

I have never taken magnesium orally but each evening I have a bath in Epsom salts with a few drops of lavender oil, I sleep really well now after years of insomnia. Magnesium is absorbed through skin and it really does help.

your absolutely right Gilly ... I buy it in bulk and keep it a huge glass vase by my bath and throw 4,5 or 6 handfuls every day into my bath ...

I also make my own Magnesium oil.. to spray on painful areas.
