Ache & discomfort at front of throat

Hi does anyone else suffer from ache/ discomfort at front of throat ? I have been hypo for 10 years take 100mcg Levo mon to fri 125mcg on a weekend. Generally I feel well but this nagging feeling in throat is getting me down. Tsh been up & down over last few months which is when discomfort started, last reading was 2.9 & Gp increased weekend dosage as feel better when Tsh about 1 . Due to have more blood tests in 2 weeks unsure of t3 & t4 readings. I have not been tested for antibodies recently although I was a few years ago but def didn't have hashimotos then.Gp sent me for ultrasound due to me complaining about this strange feeling but ultrasound was clear. I am 53 and menopausal (although still having periods) & wondered if this could be affecting my thyroid ? Also I am belching a lot which seems to relieve the sensation momentarily. Any advice would be greatly received just fed up of this feeling in my throat so will try anything. Also have been avoiding gluten for the last four days but as yet never noticed any difference. Thankyou for reading this hopefully I'll get some replies:))

Hi alysonkerry- I get the exact same thing. When I went gluten free it went away. I've been gluten free since August and it was a few weeks after going gluten free that my neck/throat went back to normal. Sometimes I'd feel like I had pressure on my throat. I have noticed if I've eaten anything with gluten in that my neck and throat discomfort come back.

It does still sometimes come back, but definitely going gluten free has largely relieved the neck discomfort

Thankyou so much for your post I wondered about hashis was tested for it s few years ago but antibodies test came back negative so was told I didn't have hashis but I think that although hypo I could still be struck by hashis at any time ?? Would hashis or an antibodies attack show up on my ultrasound or would I have to have a blood test to confirm or deny antibodies?? Will discuss with Gp on the 20th my next appt after having my next lot of thyroid bloods done. Thanks for your help 😊😊

If you didn't have antibodies you wont have hashimotos.

Thankyou I appreciate your reply however I haven't been tested for antibodies for several years. I was tested a few years back & didn't have them & wondered if it was possible that although none last time when tested whether it was possible for that to change & I could have them now ? Thanks for your post :))

Hi Alyson I have hashi and i had weird throat/neck symptoms and a feeling like cant swallow properly and recently had thyroid ultrasound which showed nothing serious. The symptoms come and go with hashis. I would talk to your gp about blood test for antibodies to find out if you have hashi. Good luck

Thankyou so much that sounds exactly like my symptoms will def discuss with Gp. Was tested for antibodies a few years ago & negative although didn't throat discomfort at time so didn't know if it was poss for me to have antibodies now many thanks :))

They can check your antibodies quite easily as I've had mine checked recently along side t4 and t3 by the nhs, think mine were low though at 14. I have problems like this though and it is worse after I have eaten carbs. My neck often swells also.

Re belching this could be due to low stomach acid which is common in hypothyroidism.

You obviously needed an increase in hormones as a TSH of nearly 3 is too high. We need it around 1 or lower.

When you get your next test it should be the earliest possible, fasting (you can drink water). Also allow 24 hours gap between last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards.

Get a print-out of your results with the ranges and post for comments.

If you've not had B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate tested ask for these too.

Thankyou. When I have my bloods done I have always taken my levothyroxine as normal that day. My next blood test is at 9.30 in morn. If I do not take meds will this not give a false reading to my previous bloods as I have always had meds before tests which is what the phlebotomist told me to do take levothyroxine as normal on day of test no matter what time bloods are taken ? Thankyou again :)£

Usual advice here is to delay taking Levo until after blood draw. Usual advice on ALL thyroid tests, is to do early in morning, ideally before 9am. No food or drink beforehand (other than water) This way your tests are always consistent, and it will show highest TSH, and as this is mainly all the medics decide dose on, best idea is to keep result as high as possible

Extremely senior endocrinologist also advised me NOT to take Levo in 24 hours before test. I normally take at bedtime, but if doing a test, I delay taking until following morning after bloods done.
