Test results, a few months old but would appreciate your opinions...

Hi, I'm new to posting on this forum, but I have been reading posts on here for a while.

Bit of background detail - I've been feeling exhausted, miserable and 'slow' for a few years now, as well as sensitive to the cold and a whole other bunch of symptoms. 12 years go I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and have taken various medications since. A couple of years ago I was found to have chronically low vitamin D, and was treated for that. I've still struggled, particularly with low energy, so I took a full thyroid blood test back in May, didn't do much with the results as my energy picked up with me not working. Now I'm back in work and really struggling, so I wondered if perhaps someone could give me some advice/suggestions based on these results. Oh, and hypothyroidism seems to run in my family, one person on my dad's side and at least 4 on my mom's (including my mom).

THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE 1.35 mIU/L 0.270 - 4.200

FREE THYROXINE 14.1 pmol/L 12.000 - 22.000

TOTAL THYROXINE(T4) 92.8 nmol/L 59.000 - 154.000

FREE T3 4.25 pmol/L 3.100 - 6.800

REVERSE T3 23 ng/dL 10.000 - 24.000

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY 15.090 IU/mL 0.000 - 115.000

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES 17.51 IU/mL 0.000 - 34.000

VITAMIN B12 215.7 pg/ml 191.000 - 663.000

- I did try and correct this by taking a mega high dose for a couple of weeks, then taking 1000% of RDA every other day.

FOLATE (SERUM) 14.52 ug/L 4.600 - 18.700

25 OH VITAMIN D 122 nmol/L 50.000 - 200.000

CRP - HIGH SENSITIVITY 1.9 mg/L 0.000 - 5.000

FERRITIN 97.9 ug/L 13.000 - 150.000

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!!

Hi, CJ, You haven't said if you are taking any thyroid hormone replacement, but your antibodies are within range, which means you haven't got the auto-immune version of an underactive thyroid. B12 should be at the higher end of the range so you need to supplement regularly rather than for a couple of weeks.

With your family history and your thyroid results I would say if notvalready you should be treated from the low readings and how you are feeling. If you are already on.m medication you would benefit from an increase.

Assuming that you are not yet on medication and he gives you a trial. You would need to be retested after 6 weeks and then post your results. Most then need and increase but sadly doctors think that if you are in range then you are fine. It's where in the range that is important. If he says notvto meds but retest in a few months that seems the way many will go and it's just to make sure that there isn't some sort of error.

Welcome to the forum, Calamityjen13.

Thyroid antibodies are negative for autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's) and thyroid levels are euthyroid (normal) and don't indicate any thyroid dysfunction.

B12 is very low. Ideally your GP will test to rule out pernicious anaemia before you supplement. If you have PA you will need B12 injections for life. If PA is ruled out you could supplement 5,000mcg methylcobalamin daily for a couple of months and then reduce to 1,000mcg daily maintenance dose.

Folate, vitD and ferritin are optimal. CRP is low which is good as it is an inflammation marker.

Thanks for all your replies. I had this test done privately, as the doctors will only check TSH and T4, which show up as ok. I'm not on any treatment for my thyroid, I've asked about trialling levothyroxine, just to see if it made me feel any better, but I've been told no by my doctor, even though I've been on a whole host of different psychiatric medications. I'm not even sure I am depressed, it's only because I feel so tired that my mood gets low.

What's the test for PA? I'm not sure if I have been tested before or not, I've had so many blood tests over the years!

I just feel like something doesn't feel right with me, like I'm not functioning right, and haven't for a few years. I only feel ok if I sleep for 10-11 hours a day, but that's just not sustainable!

Calamityjen13,

Intrinsic factor antibody blood test is one way to determine whether you have PA but 50% of tests are false negative.

If you feel better with 10-11 hours sleep you obviously need more sleep than the average and should try to ensure you do get adequate sleep.
