Low baseline Cortisol in short acting synacthen test.

Hi,

I recently had a short acting synacthen test which showed my baseline cortisol at 8am was 170 rising to 426 post synacthen. I understand that this is low but that the rise shows my adrenal glands are working. My endo called me today and said the results did not indicate addisons and my pituitary tests were ok as were my thyroid. I will get the exact figures when I see her.

Does anyone know if the low baseline would be responsible for my fatigue/brain fog/achiness and what could be causing the low baseline. Also any advice on natural treatment for borderline adrenal insufficiency would be much appreciated.

Endo go by their lab ranges not symptoms. Adrenal hypofunction causes lower cortisol. Adaptogen herb help for some .I had to start with nutri adrenal extra due to severe fatigue.

Saliva test will give more details.

My 18yo daughter had a low baseline of 200 but like you, it rose to 400 at SS test, so "normal" result. Low cortisol can cause all the hypo symptoms including those you mention. Her symptoms improved greatly on the Paleo Autoimmune protocol. She's also been taking a vairiety of supplements including iron, B complex, B12, vit D, selenium, iodine (she is deficient according to tests), zinc, magnesium, fish oils etc.

Relaxation activities such as yoga, deep breathing and hot lavender baths have also helped, as well as reducing stress and getting plenty of sleep. She's recently started doing FAR saunas. Over the period of 13 months her health has slowly and steadily improved, and she has gradually reintroduced foods although she remains gluten free. Good luck.
