This site helped me realize, and helped me to analyse my bloods results for underactive thyroid. I was under medicated, and my doctor agreed with me, so thank you to those who helped me. I am in the process of increasing my thyroxine. Today I received my Vitamin and Minerals results and I would like to know if I am low with these as well.

Here is what they say:

Vitamin B12 537.0 (211-900)

Ferritin 70.1 (12-300)

Serum Folate 4.5 (2.4-20.0)

If there is anything else you need to know please let me know as I had quite a lot of blood work done....thanks so much

Saltcoats,

B12 is fine.

Folate is low in range. I would supplement a B Complex vitamin to raise folate.

Ferritin is optimal halfway through range. If you are fatigued or experiencing hair thinning or hair loss I would supplement iron with 1,000mg vitamin C to raise ferritin and retest in 3-4 months. Take iron 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

saltcoats B12 is recommended to be at the very top of its range, even 900-1000, although yours is over 500 and anything less can cause problems. If you wanted to raise it then sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges 1000mcg daily would be sufficient.

Folate should be at least half way through it's range so aim for at least 11.2. A B Complex containing methylfolate which is natural is preferable to one containing folic acid which is synthetic and your body would need to convert it.

With your ferritin level, if you didn't want the bother of iron supplements then eating liver once a fortnight will do a good job of raising it and keeping it there.

hello, thank for your reply....as far as the methylcobalamin lozenges are they in UK? as I am in UK? is this by prescription?

Solgar or Jarrows do them, easily available online (Amazon, probably others). Dissolve under the tongue for absorption directly into the bloodstream, don't chew or swallow as stomach acid destroys B12. As it's sublingual there's no need to take with food as it bypasses the stomach. You need to take a B Complex when taking B12 to balance the B vits, but you need it for your folate level anyway.

just to be sure, Is it just a normal B complex vitamin from drug store or should I look for something in particular.....just saw the Jarows, will order them......thanks for your help

Jarrows B Right?? That should be OK, a few members use that, one or two haven't got on with them. Another good B Complex is Thorne.

hello ...found them in Holland and Barrett......don't know if you are in UK.........

Ingredients:

Buling Agent: mannitol, Vitmain B12 (as methylcobalamin) 1000µg, Anti-caking Agents: vegetable stearic acid, silicon dioxide, vegetable magnesium stearate, Flavour: natural cherry, Cellulose Gum

Do you think these would be ok?

That sounds like Solgar sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges, yes they're fine, it's the one I use. I am in the UK.

Don't buy any H & B own brand, they tend to be cheap rubbish with wrong form of ingredients, likewise Boots and supermarket own brand. Go for decent brands.

B Complex:

bodykind.com/product/8310-b...

Or if you can find it Nutrisorb Liquid Methyl B Complex 15ml

Or for higher levels of methylfolate then Thorne Basic B or Jarrows B Right.
