Hashimoto diagnosis

Hi. I posted my blood tests here a few weeks back and it was suggested I had Hashis. Blood test for peroxidase antibody is 434 (<100).

My GP said it isn't Hashi because I have no pain in my thyroid, (I have a multinodular goitre).

Can anyone help me understand this please?

Ali,

TPOAb over range definitely means Hashimotos, when thyroid antibodies attack the gland, reducing the secretion of thyroid hormone until it eventually becomes deplete. This varies from person to person and may takes just months or many years.

Multi nodular goitres are common in Hashimotos and some complain of having a feeling of something stuck in their throat but not all Hashimoto attacks will induce thyroid pain.

Ali8655 It would seem that your GP knows as much about thyroid as the majority of them ie very little!

Raised TPO antibodies = autoimmune thyroid disease aka Hashimoto's or the phrase doctors seem to prefer is autoimmune thyroiditis.

You help reduce the antibody attacks by adopting a gluten free diet, supplementing with selenium - l-selenomethionine 200mcg daily, and keeping TSH very low or suppressed.

Ali8655,

Yup, your GP is wrong! Positive TPO antibodies = autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's). Whether or not there is pain in the thyroid gland is immaterial.

There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

Thank you for your replies. Saying I was confused was an understatement and your replies have cleared that up.

I've put selenium down on my shopping list. Is there any other supplements that would help.

Thank you all again for your help.

You could get vitamins and minerals tested as low levels can mean thyroid hormone can't work properly, they all need to be optimal

Vit D - recommended is 100-150nmol/L

B12 - recommended is top of range, even 900-1000

Folate - should be at least half way through it's range

Ferritin - should be half way through range

are the ones always recommended.

I don't know of any others specifically for Hashi's other than selenium, maybe something is mentioned in the links to the articles.

My B12 and folate were low and somehow I managed to persuade my GP to prescribe them. I've ordered selenium so it's just vit D I don't know.

If your GP won't test Vit D then you can do a private blood spot fingerprick test through City Assays for £28 vitamindtest.org.uk/vitamin...

If you find you're low in Vit D don't bother with any supplement your GP offers, you'll get a much better one of you buy it yourself. If you need one just ask and suggestions can be made for D3 and it's important co-factors.

Thanks Seaside Susie. I'll definitely do that.

Your Dr is a fool!

You need to be absolutely gluten free with Hashimotos to feel well.

Research leaky gut. In studies nearly 100% of people with Hashimotos were found to have leaky gut.

Kris Kresser website.

Dr Datis Khazzarian has brilliant books.

Immune system recovery plan by Susan Blum is also good.
