I am trying to heal a leaky gut.

Advice on a good probiotic and supplier would be greatly appreciated please.

Also has anyone advice on bone broth for leaky gut?

Hi Opatija,

I use VSL#3, bought direct from manufacturer as it has to be handled and shipped correctly (cold). Whilst expensive, it is highly concentrated and works fast. I have also heard good things about symprove, but that is liquid so harder to handle.

I've tried various brands but find Physis the best (50 billion & 10 strains) and have been taking for over a year - you can find them on amazon. I take them every morning with my coconut oil-milky coffee. Heard somewhere that eating fat at the same time helps. Tried taking just before food but feel the effects better when taken in the mornings.

Well I love anything coconut and virgin coconut oil is supposed to be extremely good, think they recommend having 2 tbs a day. I pu t it in my cup with coffee granules melt all with boiling water and tom up with organic whole milk. Really yum!!

Hi opatola I use my slow cooker to boil up bones in normally overnight but was recently reading a book that said do it for days and put veg in when doing so. Microbes well my hubby is fed up of hearing about um!! We don't like celkeriac but I chop it up really small pieces and put in with bones then blend into soup once cooked we don't get the sour taste but still the goodness. Hensley and Hempslry do a bone broth sure you'll find it online I get a pack of organic chicken legs and thighs 2 of each from a well known Supermarket them large chunks of carrots onoon/garluc.and boil it up at least overnight. I then take meat off bones (although it's often fallen if) then blend whole lot or whip carrots out depends what I want end product to be. I make up my own recipes it's trail and error I tend to do a good batch and freeze portions down so I build up a variety. We used to have a butcher sadly he closed but they will often give you bones for free. If you have lamb shanks you can do them on slow cooker eat meat and use that fluid for your base. Sorry for long reply but hope it'd given you some ideas good luck

I found the best way to sort out leaky gut was to cut yeast out of my diet. I have also cut down on sugar. Always check labels its shocking hidden yeast in everything. I also used probio 7 has friendly yeast s. boulardi which actually eats up the bad yeast in your gut. I feel less sluggish now and no more yukky looking tongue first thing in morning. I also discovered I had a vit d defficiency since I have been using dlux spray, magnesium oil and k2 mk7 my ibs has stopped. X

Yes, yeast is another problem.

I also have a VitD deficiency, being treated with a maintenance dose. Just had my magnesium checked today, which I suspect is deficient, so that being the case, I will supplement with magnesium also.

I have also been taking Bio-Kult for the last few months, and my bloating has pretty much gone. My digestive system has been much better.

Looking carefully at your suggestions.

I saw an Endo today who does not think I have a malabsorption problem, but then again he didn't know what NDT was for! He told me Levo is a marvellous, modern, safe drug. Why would I use an oldfashioned, possibly unsafe drug? He would only use combination therapy "if he absolutely had to."

I am beginning to treat my symptoms myself, and will also look for a good functional medicine doctor.

Yes, they have been brilliant. I've been taking two a day for about three months. Maybe I can try reducing to one a day too then, as they are quite expensive

You might find that its the vitd defficiency that has caused the leaky gut symptoms and the malabsorbtion like I did. If you use magnesium oil on your skin morning and night u will find it helps your digestive system and doesnt cause the runs. If your doc had given u the vit d its most likely d2. You are far better off with d3. Dont be alarmed if your ears start ringing when u take vit d its just telling u about your magnesium deficiency. K2 is important to make sure your calcium ends up in the right place. Can be expensive so alternative is edam or brie cheese. A blood test will probably come back saying u are not magnesium deficient they arent much good as only 1% of magnesium carried in the blood. Dont be alarmed either if you have pain which is different from vitd deficiency pain. It feels awful burning and heavy. Once the vitd starts to work often pain is caused when your bones start to reabsorb calcium and other minerals its more like an ache that may last a few months. X

I am on Vit D3, currently waiting blood test results for calcium, before GP will prescribe K2. Magnesium oil sounds a good option.

I really am overwhelmed with your responses. It is so good to know there are so many kind, helpful people around.

I'll post again when I am a few weeks into my new regime!

Again a calcium blood test wont tell you how much calcium is in your bones and teeth and thats where it should be. It gets complicated because of parathyroid gland function but bottom line is if you are supplimenting with vitd it is safer to use k2 as vitd will help you absorb calcium but without k2 the calcium can end up in your blood, soft tissues, heart valves etc. This is why he has ordered a blood test to find out how much is circulating in your blood because of the vitd as too much vit d is nasty. Magnesium will balance the calcium but must be in ratio 2:1 magnesium to calcium most docs think it should be other way round but too much calcium is also nasty esp for menopausal/ post menopausal women can cause heart problems. K2 is an important saftey measure. Hope this helps x

Yes it does help. However, I am sceptical about my GP accepting this, as I have been asking for K2 for the last 10 months. Every time I mention minerals and vitamins, she looks blankly at me and tells me to ask the pharmacist, endo or anyone else, but her! Seeing her in about 10 day's time. So, 'til then, I'll remain positive about her future response!
