I have large fibroids, though I am 10 years post-menopause.They caused very heavy bleeding during the perimenopause & I later found out I was hypothyroid also at the time. I became very anaemic.I believe all 3 are linked, but you are unlikely to hear that from an NHS Dr.

During my perimenopause years I was advised to have a hysterectomy but I resisted, having them removed this way. They were unable to remove them with any of the newer, less drastic options. If they are not causing a serious problem, they can be lived with.Trying for a baby is one reason to have them removed & of course they are willing to let you keep your womb. Many doctors want to remove cervix & ovaries at the same time as the womb & then put you on HRT.

I was recently advised again to have a hysterectomy before I got any older because I would be less frail for the op(he warned me they might turn cancerous. This is not true)

If you are not troubled by symptoms I advise you to do as much internet research as you can before you see a gynae,so you can separate fact from fiction. Many people have fibroids without any symptoms.

Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it.

It was just picked up on a ct I had of my colon for IBS. Spoke with doctor today and she's sending me for a pelvic scan to get more info on size and location. I'm only 35yrs and we had hoped to try for another baby before finding this out. I've had hypothyroidism themail past 15 years. Tshe was up and down this past year or so and I had low iron levels in June. My doctor assured me today that they don't turun cancerous.

Hope you don't mind me asking what we're your symptoms of fibroide?

I too have had fibroids for years and associated gynie problems. I too wonder if there's a connection - had polycystic ovaries when I was younger and never had a great great time of 'women's things !'

Hi Rachel-Ann,

Just wanted to let you know that hysterectomy is not the only option. Depending on the position and size of the fibroids, you may be able to have a uterine fibroid embolisation - in this operation the blood supply to the fibroids is cut off and they die. Please note though that not all fibroids are suitable for this procedure.
