Has anyone had a Parathyroid operation for hypothyroidism only to be left with Hypothyroidism for the rest of their lives. I live in leicestershire. I have been ill way back but doctors never picked up on it. Eventually with the help of the internet i found a lot about Parathyroid. I photocopied it and took it to my gp who had never heard of it. She googled it on her mobile and then phoned a friend at hospital. I was sent to see someone. I had no explanation of what happrned to me or why i am left like this. Surgion said my operation would be 20mins..... it was over 6. Ive still got symptoms constantly but my bloods like most everyone elses come back normal. Im on 50 levathroxine. Gp says you dont hurt if your hypothyroid.Other gp gave me a leaflet to see a councillor for stress.... i told her i am one. Am sick of being fobbed off and am worried this surgion wasnt competant to have carried out my op. He promised hed tell me what happened but i cant get to see him. My doc also says dont blame everything on your thyroid. I could go on but i wont. Just feeling upset as no gp cares. Sorry for rant... ive never had the nerve to post before xxx

Pepperkim2,

The 4 parathyroid glands regulate calcium, potassium and parathyroid homone. Parathyroid glands are totally separate to the thyroid gland and the only reason to remove parathyroid glands is if they have tumours causing hyperparathyroidism. A parathyroid operation to remove one or more of the parathyroid glands won't cause hypothyroidism. A partial or complete thyroidectomy may sometimes cause damage or loss of the parathyroid glands resulting in hypoparathyroidism requiring regular calcium and vitamin D supplementation.

50mcg is a very small dose and is unlikely to be sufficient if you have had a total thyroidectomy. Can you post your recent thyroid results and ranges and I'll tell you whether you are optimally medicated.

There seems to be some confusion as to which operation you had and for what reason, as Clutter says the parathyroids are not connected to the thyroid, they have different functions.

I wonder if you mean you had thyroid surgery which left you with hypothyroidism and needing thyroxine, this would be different to a parathyroidectomy.

Oh my goodness yes i was hyperthyroid to start with. Then had a parathyroid operation which was rouge with something being taken away which was the size of a walnut which left me hypothyoid. I will go to the doctors and ask them to print out my results. Sorry for the mistake and thank you for comments xx
