I am wondering if I have an underactive thyroid, I have been in poor health for the last 9 months getting more and more tired seem to be catching virus after virus, feeling sick in the morning and the glands on my neck are throbbing when I wake up or over do it.
I have put on weight also despite taking care of what I eat.
Sometimes hot then cold, I am thinking of having blood tests but just need to get over a very severe chest infection. I am 67.
I am usuallly full of energy and upbeat but of late have been quite down.

It could well be that you have a dysfunction of your thyroid gland and I will give you some links and advice.
Ask the GP for a blood test to check your thyroid hormones. They only usually do TSH and maybe T4 as well. We need all of the hormones checked and if GP wont do so, you can have private ones through a recommended lab who give a small discount to us and also a tiny sum to Thyroiduk.org.uk the main website.
You need TSH, T3, T4, Free T3 and Free T4 and thyroid antibodies.
The test should be the earliest possible and fast but you can drink water. If you were diagnosed you'd allow 24 hours gap between levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement) and the test and take it afterwards.
Also ask GP to test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate. We can be deficient.
The doctors make the diagnosis on the TSH alone which doesn't always bode well for us if we have clinical symptoms.
Get a print-out from the surgery with the ranges of the results and post on a new question.
