Judith I see there are no replies, post again. I guess different time zones don't help.

I'm sorry I can't help but just wanted to offer you support.

So many people have had their thyroid removed I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hopefully you'll get some helpful replies.x

Hi. I'm so sorry to hear about the problems you've faced.

I had my right thyroid removed. Honestly I was scared too, but don't be. My surgeon cut along a natural crease in the neck & you can't see my scar at all. I had 7 small stitches which are removed after a week. Once you wake up your neck is tight but you're not in much pain. Sometimes you'll have a drain (I didn't).

You'll just feel uncomfortable for a while. Once the stitches are out you'll feel better.

I was home within 24 hours. My throat was sore & my voice husky, ( Your surgeon will probably warn you that it's so close to the vocal chords) for about 2 weeks.

They say you can go back to work within 2 weeks. Mine was a lot longer just because I have a very physical job.

The only thing I found is my neck spasms sometimes, but unfortunately there's nothing that can be done.

I hope everything goes well. I'm sure it will

Hi, I had my thyroid removed as I had a very large Goitre, Its only natural to feel scared , I was, but I knew I had to have the surgery so I always try to think positive, yes I was sore when I woke up, but a shot of morphine soon helped. I had a drain, that wasnt uncomfortable. I spent two nights in hospital, I had a husky voice for a while, I recovered well. Good luck with your surgery Bev.

Judithba,

I had a partial thyroidectomy followed by completion thyroidectomy 3 months later.

I had no complications to parathyroid glands or vocal chords.

A drain was inserted on both occasions to reduce swelling and was removed before I was discharged the day after surgery. I didn't have much pain afterwards and was able to eat normal food although it is a good idea to get in soups and soft foods in case your throat is sore. There was copious pain relief available in the hospital and to take home. I didn't need much after the 3rd day.

Healing was good and the one long running stitch was removed 7-10 days later. My scar is a thin white line in the hollow of my throat and is barely visible. I was given thyroid replacement the morning after completion thyroidectomy.
