Child with Hashimoto's, currently euthyroid.

My 8yr has recently been diagnosed with Hashimotos, following tests: bloods (TSH, T4 and antibodies) , ultrasound scan and biopsy on a goitre. She is currently euthyroid. As a sufferer myself of Hashimoto's (diagnosed this year) and an underactive thyroid, I am just not happy with a proposed wait and see approach! Any suggestions! Am reading a lot about gluten free, not sure where to start with a child!

Pommykiwi,

Hashimotos is an auto immune disease that causes thyroid dysfunction & the standard care by the medical profession is to wait until the immune system has destroyed enough thyroid tissue to classify them as hypothyroid, and then prescribe thyroid hormone replacement. However, if managed correctly, the Hashi progression may be slowed or even halted.

I am sorry to hear of your daughters diagnosis. If she is still euthyroid and asymptomatic, it is important to keep antibodies levels low by removing the trigger.

For many, this is removing gluten from their diet but some people have to switch to toiletries that don't include all the "extras" such as sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate, formaldehyde, paragons, triclosan and phthalates and try to keep their lives chemical free (stuff like washing conditioner on bed sheets isn't a good idea).

People with Hashi are prone to nutrient//iron deficiencies so it is important to have these tested and address according to results. The four "biggys" in adults are Vit B12, Vit D, Folate and ferritin but I don't know about children. Vit D, selenium and fish oils are known to reduce inflammation/thyroid anti bodies.

A good read is "The Root Cause" by Isabella Wentz.

PK,

Good internet sites are:

Anything with Chris Kresser, hypothyroidmom,, Marc Ryan (Hashi Healing) but the king of Hashi is Dr Datis Kharrazian, who has also written two excellent books.

If you google any of these names with + Hashimotos, there is so much info.

Obviously all this is initially aimed at adults and any info may need adjusting for a child. If this were my daughter, I would be looking to a nutritionist familiar with autoimmune issues, as your daughter has much important growing to do.

Although a little early, be aware that puberty and periods may trigger an autoimmune response.

Katepots suggestion (below) of a nutribullet is excellent, as smoothies are a good way of getting nutrients into children in yummy way but be aware that hashi people are more prone to blood sugar issues.

Thank you! Had thought about a nutritionist, and yes aware that such events as puberty can trigger a response, so in a way trying to educate myself and her overtime to minimise/ reduce and not wanting to leave totally in the hands of Drs who might just throw levothyroxine at her.

Radd, shouldn't that be 'parabens', rather than 'paragons'?

Sorry to hear that.

It's imperative that you and her are religiously gluten free if you want to feel better.once you get the hang of it it's not as bad as you think. You'll just have to send her off with lots of yummy alternatives. There's lots. Get rid of anything with gluten out of the house as better for everyone anyway! Or have special cupboards if that's impossible!

You'll have to explain it all to her and really stress how much better she'll feel. Bloating and bowels will improve, pain eases...

Bread, pastry, cake, biscuits, sauces, stocks and gravies are bad. Basically avoid anything with wheat barley and rye in.

All the knorr stocks and gravies are gluten free though. Making your own bread is easy as no kneading involved so super quick. There's yummy cake and biscuits you can make/buy.

Research leaky gut.

Check out the paleomom website.

Dr Datis Khazzarian has some brilliant books.

Mary Shomon books

The Immune system Recovery plan by Susan Blum is so helpful. It will also help you discover any other foods that are triggers for auto immune attack.

I have to avoid milk, (almond milk is yummy) potato and tomato.

Get a nutribullet and make your own smoothies, delicious recipes and helpful towards healing leaky gut.

Good luck.

Hi I still do not know the forums rule, but, firstly we must block entry of toxins to our bdy, read stayhealthytill70.com/categ... ; then clean up - remove the ailment: stayhealthytill70.com/effec... hyper-or-hypo/ and regarding Breathing exercises (Anulom Velom) and other health related topics, watch you tube channel youtube.com/channel/UCjzB1O... Regards and feel free to get in touch...

To start gluten-free with a child shouldn't be too difficult. Also there are a lot of recipes on the Internet.

The best thing is to eat ecological and to avoid GMO foods. GMO means “genetically modified organism”, which is a new organism, not found in nature, created by scientists when they genetically modify or engineer food, produced from organisms that have had changes into their DNA.

All prosessed foods should be free from GMO, since it can create havoc in our bodies. I would recommend you to read dr. Izabella Wentz book Hashimoto's The Root Cause. She is a clinical pharmacist who was diagnosed with Hashimoto's herself, and here explains how she identified and removed the triggers that caused her to develop Hashimoto's. bookdepository.com/Hashimot...

Hello! Ummm concerns me about the use of the word "Euthroid". It's like the holy grail, when their doctor says they are "normal" the doctor believes they are euthroid, but actually very few people are once they have a diagnosis. It takes a lot of work.

Certainly at the moment she has no symptons nor do we have any health concerns for her, I took her to the Drs because of a visible goitre, but other than this we have zero health concerns, so certainly if things amiss there's nothing tangible to note.
