i have been losing hair and hair coloring all of a sudden became very irritating for some unknown reason since i just go natural blonde and that is my normal hair color but i cam across a entry that said add SWEET N LOW 1-4 packets to hair color and it has cream of tartar and something else in it that actually has a reaction to make the chemicals less but WONT AFFECT COLOR.....so i tried it hence i dread coloring my hair and didnt dare go to a salon bec i would have a redness or inflammation or hotness afterward and that cant be good.....I TRIED IT...IT WORKED!!!!!! and didnt effect hair color........ i found out that very experienced high end salons knew this trick but many colorist dont bec it isnt taught in most schools....can you imagine........this is MIRACLE IN ITSELF. i ADDED 3 packets or almost 4..i use two colors for a more natural look and so i used 2 in the half a box and 3 i think in the full box of color ........

jacr,

I am pleased that you are pleased with whatever it does BUT ....if it doesn't add colour, what does it do ? ? ...

if you have no irritation, inflammation, redness, or burn when you color your hair, this is not for you....this is to halt that...it sounds crazy but when i read that a top new york hair salon did this...i knew it had to be worth a try....i never had problems with that inflammation until i started having hair loss and got older in menopause.....

This sounds good. I used to just have highlights but this year went blond all over .... and suffered the itchy scalp. I'll speak with my hairdresser about this.

Thank you for posting.

it sounds nuts...and i was shocked when it worked....but when i googled it...i saw many other salons and professionals that knew this.....and i wondered..why has this been kept a secret....wow...one salon just put it in all the coloring whether someone had sensitivity issues or not ...just in case.....but i think they only used 1 packet per 2 oz of hair color mixed.....its the craziest sounding thing in the world but it worked.... i added a couple more packets to mine just bec i know i didnt want that burn.....and that may also have made a difference but i had read that one woman had used 4 packets in hers and her hair color still came out fine....without the burnor itch or hotness afterwards etc...the time b4 i had colored my hair, i actually had to put a pack of frozen peas on my head to cool it down...so weird....i didnt leave the color on long at all ....this time...no peas needed...lol

Are you in the US? Because the UK's Sweet n Low is aspartame. In the US it's saccharin... I would've thought that'd make a difference.

Anyway, you intrigued me enough to Google. More here: lisaliseblog.com/2014/08/th...

yes sweet n low has cream of tartar and saccharin in it...available online and those are the two ingredients that do the chemical protection.....i am shocked i had no pain...no burning......i have waited 3 mths to color my greys bec i didnt want to burn anymore....same color as b4

i was googling yesterday and found this and didnt want to post article unless i tried it and now i dont know where the article is...similar to the one you posted but was from high end salons which made it more belieaveable or i would have thought it was quackery.lol...it is just a relief to be able to color again.....

Cream of tartar is a mild acid (hair treatments like colour and permanent wave solution are alkaline), so maybe it counteracts the alkalinity of the colour - ?

correct both have a lower ph cream of tartar and saccharin hence the generic didnt have these ingredients...but the article said...make sure it has these ingredients and they keep a box near the hair coloring...

Acids are sometimes used to neutralise these treatments. I wonder why it doesn't affect the colour though. If that's the case, the cosmetics companies should look at reducing the unnecessarily high (potentially irritating) alkalinity. Good for you for finding a solution!

Could just buy cream of tartar from the supermarket.

that also occurred to me....since the colorist said in the article that the ph of the cream of tartar and saccarin is what balanced the harsh chemicals in hair dye..and i thought it would be safer too....i would not use but a little though since very little is in one of those sweet n low packets so it wouldnt take much...

In the Uk Sweet n Low doesn't contain saccharin, but you can buy saccharin tablets. Birds trifle contains saccharin and cream of tartar and so does sainsburys ginger beer, but I'm not sure about the effects of sticking a trifle on my head.
