Your Missing Gull Bladder Might be the Missing Part of the Puzzle

I read recently that if you have had your gull bladder removed your T4 will not be able to convert to T3. However, this little problem can be cleared up by taking a pill containing bile.

Do you have any links or more information - sounds interesting. I do not have a gall bladder - but then I am T3 only :-) Perhaps you have solved the mystery. Just need more info :-)

Marz & Maryh1

Many people with Hashimotos have gall bladder issues.

The liver has several pathways through which it metabolises hormones, filters toxins, cleans the blood, and byproducts are dumped into the gall bladder to help get them out of the body. Low thyroid function slows down this whole process, making the liver and gall bladder sluggish, congested and helping to make gallstones whilst bile becomes thick due to the inability to emulsify these fats.

Having your gallbladder removed will only prevent further gallbladder issues but does not correct the root of the problem.Food has to be broken down into things like amino acids (from proteins), fatty acids and cholesterol (from fats), and simple sugars (from carbohydrates), as well as vitamins and minerals.

Bile is made in the liver, then stored and released by the gall bladder, and pancreatic enzymes (released by the pancreas) includes amylase, protease and lipase. Lipase is responsible for digesting fats and works with bile, breaking the fats down which can be absorbed into the blood stream and stored in the liver for energy.

Adequate bile is (indirectly) required for good thyroid hormone synthesis as are stomach acid and digestive enzymes. Inadequate amounts can inhibit digestion of essential fatty acids, the absorption of improperly digested fat globules, raising cholesterol levels and leading to deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins (Vit A, E, K and the all important Vit D ! ! ..)

Bile also serves as the route of excretion for bilirubin. When diagnosed with Haemochromotosis last year my liver enzymes and bilirubin were through the roof. This gave me a permanent sun tanned look ( jaundice) but supplementing bile (together with theraputic phlebotomy) has reduced bilirubin levels..

It is thought beets and beet juice are good to use for mild bile disruption as are rich in betaine, which stimulates liver cell function and provides a protective effect for the liver/ bile ducts, but ox bile is better for actual bile deficiency as is thought to encourage bile secretion.

Introduction of Ox Bile and Betaine HCL had to be done very slowly because I was so intolerant. The ox bile is taken in a cycle of 1 before each meal on day 1, 2 before each meal on day 2, 3 before each meal on day 3 and then repeating.

I supplement Allergy Research Group Ox Bile but there are loads of others on the market. Nutri Advarnced does one. I also supplement Taurine that is a major constituent of bile and Curcumin which has an anti-inflammatory effect in gastric conditions.

Reducing inflammation will calm immune responses and histamine levels. Histamine helps control stomach acid and too much will further disrupt gut issues. Everything is a vicious circle. I also supplement milk thistle which helps keep liver clear, and digestive enzymes .

I still have my gallbladder and have never suffered with stones. Since improving gut health and providing biliary support my thyroid hormones (T4 & T3) have worked much better. I have also suffered a weird thick gooey saliva problem for the last two years which I think has got slightly better since starting this regime one year ago but the journey continues .......

Chris Kresser is a big advocate of ox bile whether you have a gallbladder or not..

Thank you so very much for this info radd. I have still mine but was recently diagnosed with a very small gall stone. (I suffer with bloating unless it is 'taken down' with antibiotics - yes, I KNOW... only thing that works... I used herbals and all manner of probiotics etc etc). Among other things, I take milk thistle, digestive enzymes and HCI Betaine/Pepsin and really want to try to 'fix' the gall bladder issue. I will check this out, being particularly concerned with the pancreas-bile connection: my mother and her sister (14 years her senior) both died at 71 with pancreatic cancer... I'm kind of interested. I really like Chris Kresser too.

For those with food intolerances and a gluten trigger like myself, this can impair the signal to the gall bladder to release bile, as when the gut is damaged, the cells that line the small intestine (epithelial cells) are less able to secrete cholecystokinin needed for the release of bile salts.

Thank you for informative replies. So helpful. I suffered pancreatitis many times and was eventually carted off to hospital with a blue flashing light :-) After two weeks in hospital they could not find any cause - everything was fine - but guess they did not test the Thyroid. This was all about 30 years ago. Eventually they decided to remove a rancid gall bladder without stones. Somehow I managed to blame this on the Crohns that I had suffered since my 20's. Inflammation funneling upwards and all that !

Have to say I am so blessed as I can eat almost anything and do not have a problem with fats. Cholesterol fine - albeit I look more at Homocysteine which was high but now into single figures :-) Greeks seem to understand this one !

Thank you for that radd. I haven't touched grains now for years but the very small gallstone seemed to coincide with a few months after I'd changed to LCHF. Maybe an issue with high fat - which I really can't stop - I absolutely need a fair whack of high fat? I will try some ox-bile; goodness knows, from someone who loathed taking anything [I used to take Armour, still take Nutri Adrenal Extra and don't want to think what's in that! ;-) ]. if this can help, I'm up for giving it a shot. As my G'Mother used to say, "I'd take horses s*it and tram tickets if it works". Can't name brands on here, any chance you could PM me your preference... recommendation always preferable to trial and error - many rogues out there [some are docs!]. x

Linda,

No need to pm. Site rules allow supplement recommendations. All my sups are either Allergy Research Group, Seeking Health or Jarrows.

Make sure digestive enzymes are high in Lipase.

Biotics Research Corp Beta Plus contains 100mg Ox Bile and 100mg Beet. I take as advised above.

I'd take horses s*it and tram tickets if it worked too .. ;o))) ...

radd, thanks again for that and the other info.

Wow, I'm off hunting; some new company names there. Onward and upward in this quest for improved health :-) Be well.

The pill I take is called gallbladder formula by a Dr Berg. It has no lipase. You'll find him on YouTube.

Mary,

" Gallbladder" by Dr Berg looks excellent and contains everything in one little pill - so much easier.

The lipase will be contained in the Pancreatin as is part of the whole enzyme digestive mix and obtained from animal pancreases.

I have been supplementing Seeking Health Pro-Digestive Enzymes which offers lipase from plants, so the vegetarian version. I am not veggie and would like to try yours but am in the UK and can't find a source to supply Dr Bergs products..

I have posted asking if others know.

If your not eating grains your suppose to eat fat. The gall bladder is suppose to help you digest the fat. I don't seem to have any problem with it, but have very low energy, low metabolism, and I'm always tired, also gaining weight. This is not a good quality of life. So I keep trying to find the answer.

I too would be interested for more info on this no gallbladder effect. I have had gallbladder taken out as well as a total thyroidectomy. Still feeling hypo in spite of top of the range T3, below range T4 and suppressed TSH. I am on 62.5 mcg Levo and 50 mcg t3. (Cynomel). Maybe I should try lowering Levo and increasing T3?

I am on Nature thyroid which is T123 and 4. I am also taking an enzyme pill that contains bile 100 mgs. I decided to do this after listening to several doctors on YouTube. Dr Eric Berg mentioned this in one of his broadcasts, can't say for certain which one, but put Thyroid and gall bladder in subject line.

Good luck.

Hay Everybody,

I just heard this doctor on YouTube, then heard a couple others say the same thing. ( I had put gall bladder and hypothyroid in the address line.) It sounded plausible, I had never put the two together. So I bought some bile pills (I know it sounds gross) from one of the doctors and also bought some from a health food store. I just started taking it two days ago. I don't know for sure if this will work, but I'm going to give it a shot. So far I don't feel any different.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Good luck,

Mary
