Gluten free food prescription from GP

I now understand that Gluten is not good for those who have thyroid problems. Are GP's allowed to prescribe gluten free foods for thyroid sufferers or is it only for those who have bowel issues with gluten?.

Estrellia,

G-F may be helpful for Hashimoto's patients but if you don't have autoimmune hypothyroidism there's no reason why you should give up gluten unless you have digestive issues, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea and then it may be worth trialling G-F.

G-F prescriptions are only available to patients diagnosed with coeliac disease. Some CCGs are stopping G-F prescriptions because g-f is freely available in supermarkets and shops.

I reckon it's only for people with coeliac disease.

You need to find out if you have Hashimoto's.

To do so GP needs to test for both TPO and TG antibodies.

If they won't, thyroid Uk lists private blood test options

As I recently discovered when I went gluten free, you don't have to have any obvious gut issue of any sort, to still get great benefit from going gluten free.

Plenty of info on the net about how gluten molecules mimic thyroid hormones and gluten crosses into blood stream if you have leaky gut. Etc ...all quite complex

If you definitely have Hashimoto's, worth giving it a try, to see how you feel.

I have Hashimoto's. Difference for me going gluten free has been astounding. Just wish I had done it twenty years ago

People with Hashimoto's also apparently have higher chance of having coeliacs (also autoimmune disease) Good idea to get tested for coeliacs before try gluten free.
