Hello, I had an mri scan yesterday and they said at reception that if I wanted a copy of it I would have to go to the records department but it would probably be encoded. Is there a way I can get it without it being encoded. I remember getting a copy of my ct scan in London no problem. I am going to see Dr P next week so I thought it would be good to take with me. I didn't tell them that.

I'm having the same problem at the moment. My local NHS hospital outsources its MRI scanning and the company wants to charge £50 for an encrypted copy. Whilst insisting on encrypting the scan they send me the report unencrypted! They also plan to introduce a four week delay before I receive the copy. I didn't get this problem when I had a private CT scan some time ago. Yesterday I sent a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act along with a £10 cheque (for electronic records only, £50 if you want copies of paper records). They are required to supply the data within 21 days.
I'd check with Dr P whether he has the software to view the scan before worrying too much.
