Hi guys...

Had to go privage hospital now instead of dealing with my GP as on going health issues since October....  But long story short iv had underactive thyroid since I was 16 (now 21)

Do have other health issues such as lupus an aps unfortunately.. But now I'm having to go an see an encrologist at my private hospital which was recommended from my private rumotologist.

Just wondering what to expect from an encrologist an what would be actually do to do with my thyroid?

Does this mean my thyroid may have to be removed?

Welcome to our forum. Sometimes Endocrinologists work differently. Your thyroid gland wouldn't be removed unless there was a good reason for it.

I would enquire if he would want you to have a blood test before your appointment with him, so that you might be one step ahead when you hve your consultation. The GP could do it in preparation, rather than having it on your consultation.

Ask if he wants TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3. GP should also do Vit B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as we are usually deficient.

Blood tests for thyroid hormones should be at the earliest possible and don't eat before it. Allow 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the test. This helps keep TSH at its highest as it drops throughout the day and most Endos take more notice of the TSH than the thyroid hormones.

Always get a print-out of blood test results with the ranges for your own records and you can post them for comments.

Leanne21bull,

Unless you have large nodules, cysts or goitre impacting on nearby organs, or there is suspicion of malignancy in the nodule or goitre your thyroid won't be removed.

Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders.

There's tons of very useful info on this form, well worth spending some time reading through previous posts, and investigating nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities and dietary interventions. This is a good starting point on autoimmune diets:
