Vitamin Levels Help!

Hi ,

Just really shocked at my vitamin levels. I am underweight and I don't eat meat (yes, I am trying so hard to gain weight). Yet , my vitamins levels are:

B12 897 (191.0-900.0)

Folate > 20 (3.8-20.0)

So Folate is above range , is that not good for getting pregnant or increases miscarriages? Is this linked to thyroid antibodies. What if my B12 goes above 900, as it does not have far to go?

I am not aneamic as had that checked too . I am waiting on vitamin D levels.

Orangpie, B12 and folate are best high in range. PA Society recommend B12 is optimal around 1,000. High folate is good for pre conception and pregnant women as it protects against neural tube defects (spina bifida) in the developing foetus. B12 is only available from eggs, meat and fish so If you are vegetarian or vegan you will need to supplement methylcobalamin to maintain good B12 levels.

I was advised eating small frequent meals and protein shakes would help me gainweight. Just make sure any protein shakes you choose are free of soy.

Clutter , as I desperately need to put on weight , did that work for you ?

I have been referred to a Nutritionist but I think it's a waste of time.

Hi,

What did the nutritionist do?

Pinkpeony, I've certainly stopped losing weight and it looks as though I have filled out a little. I've only been using the protein shake for just over a week so don't know whether it has had any effect.

When I was almost 2 months pregnant, I went through a big loss and went down to 47 kg, I'm 1,6m tall. What helped me was to eat nuts and tree nuts. Eat nutritional meals which are high in calorie intake. Also an extra dose of olive oil in your meals, on bread, etc., lots of nuts and tree nuts (very high in calories and with high nutritional value). Fried food with good olive oil. Gee! a very yummy diet hahaha. Do you eat eggs and dairy food? Cheese is high in calories also, yummy dairy desserts like pudding, ice creams also have interesting nutritional value and have a good intake of calories. And any thing you enjoy and snake often during the day.

evamgs what are tree nuts ?

I eat most of what you have mentioned , and I am convinced it is the medication.

I will start shakes and see what the nutritionist has to say in April.

Thank you for your interest.

There is some argument/discussion but as it is often in the context of allergy, the following is a reasonable start point to understand:

Tree nuts include, but are not limited to, Brazil nuts (are seeds), cashews (are seeds), chestnuts, filberts/hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios (are seeds), pine nuts (are seeds), and walnuts (are seeds).

Tree nut allergy is distinct from peanut allergy or almond allergy, as peanuts are legumes and almonds are drupe seeds, whereas a tree nut is a hard-shelled fruit.
