People who take certain popular medicines for heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux may want to proceed more cautiously, researchers reported Monday.

The drugs, known as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), appear to significantly elevate the chances of developing chronic kidney disease, according to a study involving more than 250,000 people.

PPI's are popular with me! I have a hiatus hernia and cannot do without theses because if I stop them, the hernia slides up into my chest and I can't even swallow water, let alone food. Clemmie

Appreciate that some people have real difficulty doing without. Hence " if you can sensibly live without". or should that be ?

PPIs aren't popular with me, but my doctor keeps trying to push them on me. I have to take something to control acid though because I am taking Naproxen, I have to protect my stomach, but I have been taking ranitidine in preference to PPIs. I suspect the same problems arise with either.

The longer I spend on ranitidine the worse I feel but giving up the Naproxen is not currently an option, sadly.

What is also annoying is that I spent about 2 years gradually getting off PPIs, swapping it for ranitidine, then coming off ranitidine as well. ( had dreadful rebound problems with what felt like excessive acid.) I was only off acid blockers for a couple of years before I had to go back on them again.
